FC34: Valkyria Freakin' Chronicle

That's right, doods. Buy or die. Even I'm buying! And I swore off new games.

Valkyria Chronicle
Overworks/Sega | PS3 | Tactical RPG | 2008

I LOVE YOU AIKAAAAAAA

SilentSnake 11-05-2008 04:08 PM

Oh good I just fired this up. More games should have War of the Lions-type graphics like this!

SpoonyGundam 11-05-2008 04:11 PM

I can't afford this right now.

:(

Eusis 11-05-2008 04:11 PM

Won't have this until Christmas, but I've never in recent memory been as amazed AND convinced by a demo as the one for this. Only Bioshock and DQVIII's were equally amazing, and I was convinced on both of those beforehand.

shivam 11-05-2008 04:18 PM

god this game is SO GOOD.

SilentSnake 11-05-2008 04:20 PM

I just played the first encounter, and I am suprised it took this long for this type of game to be made. It feels so natural to play and the concept is so simple, yet really effective. I know that Phantom Brave bears mentioning for the free-roaming movement part, but this takes it beyond sprites, which is huge.

Calorie Mate 11-05-2008 04:25 PM

Even I loved the demo, and I'm not a fan of SRPGs. I'm still a little wary of picking it up for that reason, but once I clear off some other stuff (like Mother 3), I'll probably snag it.

SilentSnake 11-05-2008 04:30 PM

Something I just realized I liked: While you are taking your turn, the enemy isn't just sitting on their hands. They're firing at you from their position while you're moving. Same thing happens during the enemy's turn with you. That's so cool.

The game's a bit chatty, though...

shivam 11-05-2008 04:34 PM

it's a table top minis game disguised as a japanese anime. Those guys shooting at you are taking attacks of opportunity. i love it.

mopinks 11-05-2008 04:40 PM

I want to play this. :'{

Adrenaline 11-05-2008 04:42 PM

I downloaded the demo but haven't played it yet. I'm worried now that I'll like it a lot.

Patrick 11-05-2008 05:18 PM

I'll be getting this... when I'm once again not completely poor. I'll probably miss the fun club, but at least I'll get caught up on other RPGs.

Odin 11-05-2008 05:23 PM

Have fun for me, guys!

Maybe for Christmas I'll get this gorgeous game.

nunix 11-05-2008 05:31 PM

No PS3, so, alas.

SilentSnake 11-05-2008 05:35 PM

So the lesson: don't position yourself into the thick of the enemy, else you risk getting surrounded and dying in a flurry of bullets. Also, tanks are scary.

Awww I'm by myself I guess:(

BEAT 11-05-2008 06:40 PM

Christmas for me too. I'll just have to make do with Gears 2 until then.

Dhroo 11-05-2008 06:52 PM

I can't play this until my PS3 gets here ;_;

Shadax 11-05-2008 09:29 PM

Sadly, this is my christmas present from the ladyfriend, so I'll have to miss out on the Fun Club.

Sprite 11-05-2008 09:45 PM

No more games this year for me. Please don't double in price, Valkyria Chronicles!

SilentSnake 11-05-2008 10:14 PM

Regarding everyone getting it later: SIGH.

More things I like!:

Each individual unit doesn't level up. Rather, you level up the classes themselves and everyone of that class is that level. Hooray for not leveling up fifty different guys!

The only differences between the units besides class are personality traits called potentials, which activate bonuses and penalties in logical situations. The best part about that is that everyone really acts like their personality traits, even the unimportant recruits. I can tell a lot of thought went into this game.

Nobuyuki 11-05-2008 10:20 PM

This game is so good it makes me forget it's from Sega.

You count Christmas here? Because I asked for it pre-ordered (though at Amazon and not knowing about the artbook. Ah well) and I'd be surprised if sales leading up to Christmas were ignored.

Reluctant Hero 11-05-2008 10:37 PM

I'm performing the optional install right now. I love how the installing screen is a piece of art that is completed over the course of the install.

Malefor 11-05-2008 10:37 PM

I bought my PS3 for this, but I got home from work after Gamestop was closed. I'll be picking it up tomorrow morning.

mugenkokoro 11-05-2008 10:45 PM

I picked it up today, and will hopefully be starting it tonight after I finish up the single-player content of LBP. I can't wait!!

demonkoala 11-05-2008 10:51 PM

Reasons for me to buy a PS3.
Reasons to kill myself for not owning one.

Damn I wish I had money...

Balrog 11-05-2008 11:06 PM

This game is awesome. The writing so far is pretty good, Alicia has had some good lines, the kid has moxie. It's funny but I thought Eternal Sonata was as good as RPGs are going to look in this console generation, I was wrong.

EDIT: I LOVE YOU MARINAAAAAAA

Sprite 11-05-2008 11:26 PM

I have heard there is singing. Can anyone confirm this? Because I have not been a fan of singing in any RPG I've played thus far.

djSyndrome 11-06-2008 06:28 AM

In the embargo period, so no new games that aren't already paid for until after the holidays.

*waits for local video store to get a copy in*

Kirin 11-06-2008 06:51 AM

I'm really glad now that I picked this up, because according to the guy working at my Gamestop, I was the *only* non-staff pre-order, and it was only after my order went in that the mothership deigned to send them *any* extra copies of the game so they could actually put something on the shelves. So I guess I've done my part to keep hope alive, or something.

That said, I'm afraid I'm way too sucked into LBP to get much into this during the actual fun club. But we'll see. Maybe if I actually complete the level I'm working on I'll find some time to put into it.
