Default Living in Groundhog Day Would Suck

I think about this way too much.
  • None of your high scores would save.
  • If you forgot to thaw that roast out yesterday, then super sucks to be you.
  • What if it’s Groundhog Day before Payday? Then what?
  • Forget going to the gym probably. You’ll never see any progress.
  • Unless you started with a clean house, then you have to either spend time cleaning up after yourself until the loop stops or give up and live in an exact amount of clutter.
  • Same goes for laundry and dishes.
  • Dear God what if you’re menstruating??
  • Your favorite restaurant always has the same specials.
  • Learning a sport would be out of the question, for the same reasons as going to the gym. You wouldn’t gain any muscle or muscle memory.
  • Any art projects you’d want to work on for longer than a day would just vanish every night.
  • You only get to travel as far as you can manage in the span of a day.

The more I think about it, the more it really starts to suck, even beyond the obvious reasons.

Imagine becoming intimately familiar with every aspect of a single day, right down to the minutia of every gust of wind. You spend months if not years in the loop, long enough to become numb to this knowledge and it just becomes the way of your world.

Then the loop ends and suddenly everything's different. Now the winds are unpredictable. You walk into traffic and nearly get run down, because suddenly there's a red Jeep where there used to be a five second gap between the Mercedes and the 1997 Toyota Corolla, and neither of them have showed up at all!

Soon, it dawns on you that you've just bought every insurance plan available from Ned goddamned Ryerson, knowing full well that you've personally died multiple times in each and every way imaginable that those plans are supposed to cover, and many more that they don't.

You dust the snow off your coat, and proceed to continue down the street. As you put your left foot in front of you, the once-solid ground gives way faster than you can react. You've just slipped on an ice puddle. How could there be ice?! There's not supposed to be any ice! There's never been any ice!!
As you tumble swiftly and helplessly to the pavement, your last thought is of Rita. Your head strikes the curb. The world goes black.

Would you really not retain any muscle or muscle memory? Retaining memories of previous iterations would require keeping the physical changes to your brain, so it would seem strange to have the brain persist but not the rest of the body. Of course, that conflicts with death and injury being reverted. But some of the deaths in the movie should have caused brain damage as well, and that didn't take. Really the movie is based heavily on a particular form of mind-body dualism that lacks scientific grounding.

Maybe it isn't actually a time loop but instead he's in a VR simulation.

Or maybe it's just a movie and you should really just relax.

Also, if you want to talk about fictional worlds that would actually suck to live in then that is a hole with no bottom.

Dude, credit cards. You can max out your card every day and never have to worry about the bill.

On the flip side, every day is cheat day. Eat without reservation! Indulge in any treat you could possibly want and never gain a pound!

In the movie Bill Murray learns to play piano, learns to precisely throw playing cards, and learns to sculpt ice. So learning physical skills over time is clearly possible.

And here's something else: You know that witty comeback that never comes to you in the moment but instead is something you think of lying in bed later that night? And how you lament that you'll never have a chance to display how clever you are because the moment has passed? But in Groundhog Day you'll always have the chance to issue the witty retort! Maybe not on the first day, but time is on your side.

I could finally read the million books I have and watch all of Netflix. And than read through all of my local library. I would finally have time to learn all the stuff that I want. Sounds pretty great.

But would probably be a Sunday, so the library is closed, electricity is down for the whole day and the weather is garbage, so you can't get outside. Infinite boredom.

But what if you max out and pig out and THEN you escape the loop?

Skills could be learned, yeah. But I think about it in the context of say....a powerlifter or a body builder. You could never go higher than your 1 rep max, right? Otherwise there'd be the potential for a significant change in your muscle mass after so many loops.

Which after escaping the Groundhog Day, would be pretty funny honestly:

"Hey man!"
"Hey how are-what the crap happened to you? Did you snort an entire tub of creatine overnight???"

I mean, he learns to throw cards into a hat or whatever. A lot of that should be muscle memory/development, dude could likely get super buff if he wanted I bet.

"Muscle memory" is not located in your muscles.

I'm pretty sure there's an entire movie about how much living in Groundhog Day would suck.
