It seems like Kain really is a conscious double agent.

Let's sequence break and go to the Shrine of Bahamut.

The Feymarch and Bahamut and both known quantities, but the Ice Mines of Tomra and King Santos? This I gotta see.

I hope they cribbed the entire Santa plot directly from Secret of Mana and you have to fight a Kris Kringle Gigas. I vote we go find out if this is the case.

(Also an ice mine surrounded by lava sounds like a fun place.)

I'm going to guess that feymarch cave is unchanged and still terrible, and bahamut will kick our asses, so let's get our Ice Level on.

Default part 1/2

Chapter 8: This Is Also Snow. So Is This As Well.

Welcome back! As it was so requested, we'll be visiting Tomra and their "Ice Mines" today.

Much of Tomra hasn't been changed. Some NPCs say different things now, such as these:

Strange? Well, hopefully he'll agree to let five armed strangers take what is undoubtedly a priceless relic by the request of a foreign power.

I'm sorry, did I say 'priceless relic'? I meant 'literally the only thing keeping the dwarves alive'.

There's no way this can go badly.

The weapon shop has the Kotetsu Katana for Edge, the Killer Bow for Rosa, things we can't use, and the Fuma Shuriken at 1000 GP each. These things are twice as strong as normal Shuriken. I buy..."a few".

In the armor shop, we have the Opal Shield and Diamond Ring, which protect against Bolt, the Power Glove, which is so baaaaaaaad has the same status resists as the Viking Helm, and the Ice Armor, which protects against Ice. I outfit everyone with what they can equip (everything except the Ring is only usable by Cecil in this group).

Outfitted properly, there's nothing left to do except go to these Ice Mines. But where are they?

Right here, of course. What's that? A 'sealed cave'? Never heard of it.

We walk inside, and I'm immediately reminded that I forgot something and walk back out.

Angel Feathers! You may remember these from the Training Room, but when used in-battle, they cast Float on the party. Porom isn't getting Float for...a while, so these are all-but-necessary unless you want to instead buy 500 HiPotions.

"That would literally be cheaper than the 20 Angel Feathers you have there."

Yeah, well... anyway!

Let's try that again.

The Ice Mines! A cynical person will just say it's a palette swap of the Sylph Cave and the Feymarch. The observant person will notice...a little more to it. Let's see if you guys figure it out.

There's a number of Undead and Spirits in here. It's *almost* worth having Edge use Fire2...until you realize his Kotetsu Katana has the Holy element.

"Is this before or after he dies before he gets to act?"

Yes.

We go down two floors to go up a floor, where we find a trapped chest!

The Wizard enemy leads by casting Fire2, Bolt2, and Ice-2 consecutively on the entire party. Despite how that sounds, it's not very threatening. Its next three actions, though, are Death, Bio, and Slow, and those *are* threatening. It will very quickly overwhelm you if you let it.

It doesn't have too much HP, but still, this was cutting it close. Was it worth it?

Yes. Yes it was.

Another chest nearby has Ice Armor. So...you don't actually have to buy that. :P

Anyway, this looks to be King Santos's place, let's go i--

A trapdoor!? (There was no real transition, so I didn't have much to screenshot there.)

Let's look around--

One step, and already a fight? It's like that corner was full of ghasts. Surely this wasn't intentional; that'd be a mean thing for Santos to do.

And the floor itself seeks to hurt us!

Over here, though, are some treasure chests. Let's see what's insi--

whyyyyyyyyyyy

Thanks to Rosa's Fire Arrows, it goes down quickly enough.

Ehhhhhhh. Slightly weaker than the Chaos Sword, and the Flame Sword I had before hits a weakness on most Undead. I rate this a C-.

(The other chest has a Power Glove.)

Default part 2/2

Down here...will any of these be trapped?

Hooray! But also... just money? I see...

Down in the bottom-right, there's a stairway that puts us back on the first floor. From there, there's another stairway that goes out of the Ice Caves completely, but also...

I wonder where this goes?

Wheeeee!

Look at that. It puts us right in front of Santos's house. Let's go in and ask nicely for the Ice crystal.

Quote:
King: Santos? Who's that?
Oh... I remember!
He's the fool who refused
to surrender!

Cecil: Let me guess...
You're one of Golbez's
fiends and you've been
impersonating the king...

Another fiend? Okay. Now we fight Alichino, Fiend of Ice! His gimmick is that when he retreats into his shell, he casts Reflect, becoming effectively magic-immune.

Edge doesn't care. (Palom doesn't even have Fire2 yet anyway, so he's not super-useful in this fight.)

At the end of his script, Alichino uses Chakra. As you may recall, this heals the target by half of their current HP.

Womp womp.

Alichino is (very) shortly defeated.

We get the Ice crystal, and...

The twins go off-screen, and after some concerning spell sound effects, return with the real King Santos!

Quote:
Santos: Ho-ho-ho! Thanks
for saving me!
Aaand, that's it. On our way out, we find there's no way to not fall down the trapdoor outside. However, Porom can use Warp to bring you back, on top of the trapdoor.

From there, we walk on out, Ice crystal in tow.

Next: We have two more crystals to collect! Again, you guys are voting on it! And to twist things up a bit, if somebody figures out what I alluded to in this update before the three votes for one choice, I'm doing their choice regardless of votes.

As a reminder, here are the options.
  • The Ice crystal is in the ice mines of Tomra, a sovereign nation ruled by King Santos.
  • The Shadow crystal is in the Feymarch, the land where summoned creatures live.
  • The Holy crystal is in the Shrine to Bahamut, God of Summons.

Please look forward to it!

The first room of the ice mine is shaped like the first room of FF1's ice cave.

The fall through a pit to a spiked undead square also fits that theme, so I'd say you figured it out.

This version is throwing out a lot of iconic moments. Tellah's death, Palom and Porom's sacrifice, Cecil isn't even a paladin yet! Do any of those things happen? (Edit: Don't actually answer this I guess)

I wouldn't trade those for four more fiends.

How does Cecil and Edward falling off a boat turn the ice mine into the sealed cave?

You've got it backwards. Sealing the cave centuries ago prevented the ice mine from forming, which caused Leviathan to become more active and attack more boats.

Vega indeed got it; it's modeled after the Ice Cave from FF1. (Personally, I think I figured it out with the six chests of gold... I wonder what this says about which parts of a dungeon I find memorable?) So next time, the Shrine of Bahamut! ...in the underground?

And yes, just as the original Four Fiends (and Calcabrina) were named after the Malebranche of Dante's Inferno, this Fiend of Ice (and, yes, the other Fiends that we'll see soon) are as well.

Maybe this version makes up for it by doing away with the rematch?

I'm looking forward to meeting Ciriatto, Draghignazzo, Farfarello, Graffiacane, Libicocco and Malacoda.

I have no idea how this version proceeds past these three quests, but I think it would be neat if Cecil never becomes a paladin, Golbez does instead and gets Paladin Cecil's sprite, and both are in the party at the same time at one point. It also might be neat for Tellah and FuSoYa to meet each other and have some friction over their similarities.

But whatever. This is fun.

This was the prediction I was hinting at earlier. It would make sense in a way to have Golbez be a more cure-focuses Paladin after some kind of redemption to balance the party out, assuming you don't take the twins to end-game naturally.

If they removed all of the *Earthshaking string of curse words* Trap Doors then I'm OK with that change.

I actually don't mind the Fiend rematch in FF4. In most games with such re-fights there tends to be no narrative justification for it whatsoever. It would have been easy to do that in FF4. instead they use it to bring Rubicante's story arc full circle. He observed that you beat him by joining forces, so he did the same thing. It takes what would have been a pointless retread and gives it some substance.
