Default Xbox Adaptive Controller

I'm seriously impressed that Microsoft is moving into this territory, as it must have required a significant outlay for R&D to produce a controller for a fairly niche market. Yet that niche market is under- or un-served by basically everybody in the entire game industry, so it's vital that somebody leads the way.

Here's an explanation of what it is and how it works:

Good to see a major player in this space. Accessibility falls by the wayside so often in high tech, and it's not for lack of good intentions.

I know Ben Heckendorn was making disabled-accessible controllers during the Playstation 2 days. It's good a major console manufacturer is working on this... Heck's stuff was useful to gamers who needed it, but was pieced together from existing equipment and probably wasn't ideal.

Seriously impressive stuff. Hopefully the other hardware manufacturers will follow suit

Or add driver support for Microsoft's solution.

Oh, wow, my hat's off to Microsoft for this. Let's see if Nintendo & Sony follow suit, at the very least.
They should be able to afford this kind of investment.

I need a way to play one-handed, and my degenerative tremor will probably make this sort of thing essential when I'm old, so I'm definitely keeping an eye on this.

They absolutely can, the problem is there's no money in it

From here. It requires a level of humanity that's tough to get the money to sign off on.

Quite honestly, all Nintendo and Sony would probably have to do is patch-in support for this controller, though I don't see that happening. Or if Microsoft would let them.

Ars has a great write up on it, they don't explicitly say it's open source but that they're open to bring this onto other platforms if the partnership arises, even sans branding.

I think the controller is as elegant as it is useful, some real great design and considerations here. Glad this is a thing.

That is really cool, and I will have to look into more about the co-pilot feature they mention! I feel like there *is* going to be a lot of money in this starting in the next decade or so as a lot of the big gaming generations get older/arthritis.

This is cool as hell and I hope that eventually Nintendo and Sony can be shamed into following suit.

edit: This video gets more into how the controller works.

I could see lots of fun for streamers, AGDQ, or even the time honored tradition of an all-ages minigame collection to improve the business case for something like this.

Yeah, no, I know there's no money to be made. I was just trying to phrase it in a more err.... gentle, less cynical manner.
I basically meant what estragon said, "shamed into" is the way of putting it.

The comic titled "Stu's Unreasonable Strawmen"?

The only comment I could find is someone worried that competitive gamers may get a hold of this and use it to cheat. Somehow. I’m not sure how. Competitive gamers use custom control rigs all the time so I’m not sure what planet this person was from.

I saw this news first in tweets, and the two main varieties of comments by idiots are basically:

(1) Console wars stupidity: "XBox? More like SuxBox! Stop wasting time on this controller and make some more exclusives, you lazy devs!!!!!"

(2) Scum of the earth: "I am piece of garbage with zero empathy, and I cannot imagine a single use case for this. Therefore, it should not exist."

There, now you don't need to seek them out in the wild.

Yes I had completely ignored the title and just focused on the last two images as my mental picture of the commenters you mentioned.
