Vega, it looks like you're just starting, so drawing from life was a really good choice. You should play with a lot of the basic ways to approach drawing to expand your visual vocab quickly. Some exercises to look up and play with: Contour Drawing, Blind Contour Drawing, Cross Contour Drawing, Gesture Drawing, and Planar Analysis Drawing. Keep drawing from life, the subject doesn't matter so much, but try to challenge yourself with a variety of objects that are built, organic, shiny, transparent, hard, soft, etc.

Get a set of soft artist's pencils, usually ranging from HB to 8B. Also pick up a graphite stick or graphite bar and a couple big erasers of different types.

What you did above is closest to contour drawing. You should set goals like doing 3 contour drawings in an hour, or 20 gesture drawings in an hour, etc.

Later, shading can be combined with any of the drawing techniques you practiced, but you don't have to worry about it yet.

If you do all the above and want some more advanced stuff to do let me know! Enjoy and good luck!

"I can post my art in this thread?"

....well, most of my art are just straight up character designs doodles and sketch, or rushed stuff.

Warning! Weeaboo contents!

I traced lineart from an unfixed sketch I made. ....I had a art style identity crisis :

Random demon character. Very very random :

Now, I'm experimenting with Japanese woodblock print-like art style. He's a character for my RPG Maker game project. And he's just a normal merchant! I swear! :

I character for my scrapped game idea (because I lack programming skills to make it close to my expectation) :

uhhh, enjoy? sorry if it's ...very ....weeaboo...

I think you're lying. He has a Pepsi symbol on his hat. What is his sinister hidden agenda?

He is actually the God of chaos-pepsi.

Just kidding, his hat is actually supposed to have a blue and red "yin-yang" symbol, but I screwed up and it end looking like pepsi.

So I had a headcanon if him that he loves drinking pepsi when he's disguising as a "normal looking takoyaki clerk" during the 30s era (he's a god in disguise)

I've been redrawing panels from old webcomics lately to practice expressions. Here are two, one from an Awkward Zombie strip and one from a comic that sadly got deleted a while back (I used to have it as an avatar):

About a decade ago I was still in the midst of my teenage obsession with all things Castlevania and engaging with the various fan communities around the series, which resulted in me picking up a pen and drawing fan art for the first and only time in my life. They're pretty cute relics in retrospect, lending a perspective on where my aesthetic sensibilities were at the time.

Vampire Killer

Castlevania II: Simon's Quest

Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse

Castlevania: Bloodlines

Castlevania

Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge

Castlevania (colloquially, Castlevania 64)

I wasn't sure where else to put this, so I decided to throw it here.

So last year I took part in MaGMML2 (Make a Good Mega Man Level 2) and my entry got like 21st place. Not bad for a first-time entry, though it certainly was lacking a few things. Most importantly: A boss. I didn't know enough about Gamemaker coding back then, but now that MaGMML3 is approaching I wanted to up my game, so I decided to attempt making a custom boss by doing a practice run on the one I never made last year:

His AI is cobbled together from a couple of bosses. His base is mostly Spark Man, and I borrowed Hard Man's targeted leap. From there I managed to suss out everything else I wanted to do. I'm still not 100% satisfied with the sprite and coloration of his bomb projectile, and there's probably a few things I could telegraph better. But for my first-ever boss attempt I'm pretty happy.

He was largely Frankensprited from several other bosses: He has an edited Wave Man head, Pharaoh Man's chest, Solar Man's arms, Tomahawk Man's waist, and Gemini Man's legs.

I've been tweaking Aurora Man, this is how the fight goes now:

I realized I technically had another color available for his sprite to use, as traditionally Robot Masters were two sprites layered on top of each other, three colors for their main body, and another three colors for face/eyes/additional flourish, so I gave Aurora Man a blue highlight on his helmet and I think he looks a lot better that way.

I also gave him a shimmering aurora around him when he's about to use his big attack. Though this is probably cheating a bit since I think the NES couldn't have handled this many colors on a single sprite effect but w/e. I also changed up his big attack since I was never happy with him just lobbing an ugly bomb. Now I have him fire two projectiles upward which scatter smaller projectiles after exploding.

I dunno though, I still think I need to work on his signature attack. The fight still feels a little, I dunno, messy?

(should I keep posting these updates in this thread, y/n?)

My main comment is just to invert the colors on the cityscape. Keep the whole sky black, the gradient under the aurora/intersecting the HP bars is distracting.

While I don't intend on revisiting the look of this stage at the moment, it's something I'll keep in mind for the future.

In the meantime, while I haven't fussed with his code since, I did complete a picture of Aurora Man, which I'm modestly proud of:

I'm bad at hands and shading, though. And I think I might have overdone it a bit with the glowing effects, but fortunately I have them on their own layer and can adjust as needed.

I admit, this makes him look more like Rainbow Man than Aurora Man, but that's already been done...

Another Gamemaker Mega Man update, this time not for Aurora Man, but my entry for the MaG48HMML contest (Make a Good 48 Hour Mega Man Level). Basically once you sign up you're given a 'box' with two gimmicks and three enemies you have to use, and 48 hours to build a level around them (you can use additional enemies, but the ones you're given should feature prominently). This is what I came up with:

Not so much in the way of art, there's no original assets here, and we weren't allowed to use custom code to make new stuff, we were strictly limited to what was in the engine. New graphics and music were fine, though I limited myself to pre-existing Mega Man tilesets, changing the colors where I needed, and used music from Darkwing Duck.

I'm pretty happy with how the level looks and sounds, though I wish I found a better color combo for the underwater metal blocks. I thought of making them a light blue but they looked too visually similar to the water, and I wanted to stay limited to the actual NES palette so I didn't have many other options.
