You could make a pretty solid Time Mage or Oracle. Mediators are eh, though.

If we're talking about future tournaments, I'll propose a Shoestring Budget ruleset: No hard restrictions (except maybe on Draw Out), but everything must be store-bought and the total gil + JP cost to outfit your team cannot exceed 10000.

Skills not available from those classes should be banned in that format.

If you included items used for inventory you wouldn't even need to ban draw out, but since the AI always has a full store that won't work. Perhaps ban Item and Throw as well, just to be consistent?

Yeah, it wouldn't matter, Time Mage and (especially) Oracle are really strong classes. Oracle can shut anyone else down and with a lot of short charge time spells and has an amazing basic attack. Time Mage is one of the top support classes in the game for Haste alone and Meteor is nothing to sneeze at with Short Charge.

That was my intent, but I'd forgotten that one of the teams always has a full stock of everything.

but if that's the go to strategy for EVERYONE, then you can counter it simply by equipping stuff to make you immune to the dangerous status effects. Thief Hats and accessories will allow you to avoid Oracle shenanigans, and even short charged Meteors could be countered by your own use of status effects, or whatever else you can think of.

I think the possibilities of making things interesting is still there. Meteor is basically the only big damage option available, and we could ban that too if we really wanted to. Yea Haste and whatnot is powerful, but everyone will have it, and all it does is make it so you can do stuff faster. The variety will still come with what people choose to do with it. It'll be a lot of people runnign around with their heads cut off, because big damage options don't really exist. Time mages using meteor and Oracles with sticks are the biggest options, and having Thieves around and dancers and whatnot. Things could totally be interesting.

I'm not saying it's not a cool setup, just that neither of those classes are anywhere near bad. At least with store bought gear (sticks are really good when there's no broken options like knight swords, and it's pretty hard to defend against every status ailment an oracle can throw out without ribbons).

Samurai, Squire, Archer, Thief, Calculator only (no skills from other classes). Now there's your 'worst class dual' (at least with Blade Grasp banned).

Who said anything about "worst classes"? Those are just classes that don't generally output a lot of damage. A battle of status effects sounds cool to me, how good they are is irrelevant. We could throw Archers in there too though if you wanted.

Samurai, hell no. They are literally the class that has Draw out, and if you equip them well they can totally do a ton of damage (they can wear Wizard Robes, Aegis Shields, and Magic Gauntlets ya know)

Squires can also be pretty awesome.. they might be ok, but we're starting to get into just having weaker versions of the same metagame. They're like.. crappy knights.

Calculators being in the format just makes it so Math Skill is legal, and there's literally nothing else interesting about them so I say skip them.

35 F. Oracle
81HP, 72MP, PA2, MA10, SP8

Octagon Rod
-
Flash Hat HP+88 MP+15 MA+1 Speed+1
Wizard Robe HP+30 MP+22 MA+2
Mage Gauntlet MA+2

MA15, Octagon Rod damage 180. Nothing to sneeze at. For reference the best HP I could get was a Male Time Mage/Oracle (86) with Thief Hat (+100) and Black Costume (+100), which is still two-shot by the above.

Oracles with sticks are good damage dealers, is mostly what I'm saying. :P

But they have to fight close up, one person at a time. Which is better than ninjas throwing stuff from 8 panels away, or wizards blowing up everything around them with draw outs. It's not gonna be 1HKOs all day.

Samurai can't equip shields. It makes them the worst of the heavy armor classes. Especially since the game is dumb and doesn't give them inherent two hands. The ninja has inherent two swords! What's the deal, Square!?

I was thinking maybe the tournament could be only classes with charged skills. Or maybe a pure class tournament. But that takes away a lot of what makes FFT interesting.

Hmm, I must have never realized they dun use shields cuz I literally always gave them 2-hands when I used them. And yea, that skill should be inherent, but they've never done that. In FF5, the Knight has that skill, and he has to equip it too. It's one of my favorite skills tho, put that on a Red Mage and you've got a character that's viable for the entire game.

Still, I think a format limited to

Time Mage, Oracle, Mediator, Thief, Archer, Dancer, Bard, and Mime.

and the skills available from those classes, would be hella interesting. Lots of buffs, debuffs, statuses, and lesser used classes. In a format where huge damage and hard to kill characters don't exist, I'd be interested to see what people come up with.

They can't use shields, but they can use bags. +1 MA all the same.

Lol, there ya go. I always forget about bags unless I'm actually playing the game and I see them available in my inventory. Should be a female samurai in the first place, so it's all good.

I generally dislike attacking with Flails, Axes and Bags because of how random their damage is. If I'm grinding JP I will sometimes equip bags just for a change of pace. I usually do that on classes that don't attack with their weapons much (or ever).

Flails and Axes are powerful throwing (and breaking) weapons but they're expensive to use so they generally aren't cost-effective. Of course near the end of the game when you have Scrooge McDuck levels of Gil that doesn't really matter so much.

The problem is if you give her a bag she may just use it.

I made a team this time!

Quote:
Crabtree (Female Black Mage)
70 Brave, 70 Faith
Save Fading Life

Black Magic (None)
Draw Out (Muramasa, Kiyomori, Murasame)
Blade Grasp
Magic Att UP
Move+2

Wizard Rod
Flash Hat
Robe of Lords
Setiemsen

Ironsides (Male Ninja)
70 Brave, 70 Faith
Protect Ally (Crabtree)

Throw (Knight Swords)
Calculate: (Blind Rage, Raise2, Frog, Slow)
Hamedo
Magic Defend UP
Move +3

Spell Edge
Scorpion Tail
Thief Hat
Rubber Costume
Angel Ring
It's Gerad's draw-out user with different counter and move skills, and different armor. There's also a really goofy Ninja Calculator that there only for your entertainment. Let me know if I cheated!

I spent about 2 hours putting this team together, then found that it's practically identical to dtsund's. I don't know whether to post it or just live vicariously through him.

Too bad because a pair of archers is pretty deadly in the hands of a thinking person.

Looking at the options I'm pretty sure the best party with that setup is a song and dance troop with a mime. Cheer Song, Bloody Strings and Life Drain are the only healing options, and while Oracles with sticks and Meteor time mages are decent damage dealers, mimed Wizanabus is clearly the overall winner for damage.

Well, I haven't made mine yet, and I'm on vacation at the moment, so... not this week. Maybe end of next. I'm in no hurry.

Those teams really aren't that close, they just share action and weapon choices. Your support skills, armor and math choices are pretty different.

Pretty sure "All Magic" isn't a viable choice for Math Skill. There's limits on what you can have.

I dunno what they are tho cuz I said "eff Math Skill" for my team.

Wow, you really can just have everything? Why? Why have the other options at all? I figured the point of it was to limit your ability to just have wutever spells u want.

will prolly get crazy tho cuz u have no idea wtf he's gonna use if he's got everything.
