Shadow isn't a spell!

There's no rhyme nor reason to this thing?!

B... wh...

Okay. That's it. This romhack jumped the shark with this update if it hadn't already. It's one thing to palette-swap all of the fiends. It's another thing to mimic their gimmick. It's a third thing altogether to copy the story beats. There's no reason this guy needs to come back from the dead and back-attack you!

I...

I shouldn't have to spell out that the Fiends' elements are named after the crystals they're trying to steal

...right?

There's a certain logic to it.

FF has expanded to eight main elements since FF4. To use XIV as an example, there's the Black Mage elements of Fire, Ice, and Lightning, and the White Mage elements of Wind, Water, and Earth, and then you have Holy and Dark

Fire, Wind, Water, and Earth were covered, so that left Ice, Lightning, Holy, and Dark.

anyway if you love these crystal names then

oh boy, i'm excited

I for one like the callbacks to the original. Interestingly, I think it also works from a gameplay perspective: the player is going to think about swapping rows, but doesn't know for sure what's coming and whether it is really wise or if it might backfire. It gives the player a chance to feel smart and happy when it works out.

I mean his attack is so far back in the AI it would be easy to just have Edge or Cecil swap if you'e caught off guard.

Attempts to reconcile Socratian four-element worlds with the standard evocation spells from early D&D is never elegant. "If lightning bolt is its own element, then it needs an opposite, and then an opposite for earth, and then what element is this poison spell? And then..."

End result is that every Esper in FF12 gets an element, including gravity, poison, death, and soul. So I'm guessing any or all of those will show up eventually.

The best I've seen was a d20 product that had two tiers of damage types: elemental damage (fire, earth, air, water) which were common and easy to use and defend against and energy damage (electricity, sonic, acid, poison, radiant, necrotic) which were more rare and hard to work with.

I miss Time as an element from FF1.

Sixteen? Eight Lunar crystals in the FuSoYa's palace boss rush. Maybe that unexplained one on the Lunar Whale gets one too.

You likely have to fight a fiend when you use The Crystal during the final fight, as well.

As I understand it, FF11 did something similar to the way five elements theory interacts. In Wu Xing you got Earth feeds Metal feeds Water feeds Wood feeds Fire feeds Earth. If your FF11 weirdly-Black-Mage-heavy party plays their cards right, Flare gives the enemy a water weakness, so you cast Flood, which gives a Lightning weakness, so you cast Burst, then Quake, then Tornado, then Freeze, and by now everyone's run out of MP but theoretically you can start over with Flare.

Default part 1/2

Chapter 11: A Shocking Twist

Welcome back! We've recovered all three of the crystals that King Giott asked us to check up on. Let's go back and tell him what we learned!

Quote:
Giott: How did it go?

Cecil: We have the other
three crystals and
stopped Golbez's fiends
from taking them.

Giott: Splendid! They will
be safe here in our
fortified castle.

Cid: They sure will!

Quote:
to use the power of the
Bolt crystal to generate
an electrical field that
prevents warp spells!
Dang, no cheating this time. Boooooo.

Quote:
Edge: ......

What was that?

Rosa: I didn't hear
anything...

Edge: Shh! Someone is
sneaking around...

I do like this a little better than when Yang does it. In the original, it's just Yang saying that he senses something and Giott is immediately "let's open the hidden door to the dark crystal next to my throne!" At least here, Edge calls out the wall specifically for having something behind it.

Quote:
Giott: That's the way to
the crystal!

Cecil: Come on, let's go!
But then, the castle starts to shake!

Quote:
Cecil: I guess we're about
to see just how well
defended this castle is...

Cecil: Rosa, you and
Cid help the dwarves
fight off the airships.

Rosa: Right!

Cid: You got it!

Cecil: Everyone else,
let's go to the crystal
room and find the spy.
They begin to split up, but

Quote:
Rosa: Take care...

Cecil: I will. You too...
Now, a quick look outside at the battle starting to take place.

Quote:
Golbez: Pilot, take us
closer. I want to be
within warp range.

Kain: But master...

Kain: How can we warp
through that electrical
field?

Golbez: It seems Malacoda's
toys are not as useless
as they appear.

And here's Malacoda, the (you guessed it!) Fiend of Bolt.

Quote:
Golbez: You'd better...
Cut to the crystal room! Where we find...a doll?

Quote:
Porom: It's one of Luca's.
But then, the doll moves and grabs the Bolt crystal!

Quote:
Cecil: It took the
crystal!

Edge: Someone must be
controlling it!

Cecil: Either way, we have
to get the crystal back
in place before Golbez
decides to warp in here!

Now we fight Calbrena, the doll! It doesn't do much, really. Fights for decent damage, can Glance to inflict Charm, and can Stop. It doesn't have much HP.

It's defeated quickly enough.

Cecil puts the Bolt crystal back on the pedestal.

But he was too late, as Golbez and Kain have already gotten inside!

Quote:
Golbez: Step aside.

Cecil: Never!

Golbez: Very well...

He easily knocks out everyone here.

Quote:
Golbez: Now, Kain, get
the crystal!

Kain: With pleasure...
While he's doing that...

This was a bad idea from the start! As they leave...

You have no idea how many times I had to rewind this to screencap that flash.

Kain knocks out Golbez from behind!

Quote:
Kain... You...... ...
A healing sound effect plays as Kain picks us all back up! Malacoda also appears, to protect Golbez.

Quote:
Malacoda: Not until you
hand over that crystal!

And here's Malacoda! You can also see where I never fixed my rows from Ciriatto; whoops!

Her first course of action is to wrap herself up in a tornado, like Barbariccia. Similarly, Kain has to Jump to break her from it.

Before that happens, though, she'll probably get off Bolt3 on everyone.

...and also use Magnet on someone, paralyzing them. Finally, she'll Fight someone, then loop from Bolt.

When Kain lands, she'll come out of tornado form and immediately Fight as a counter. Then she'll Fight again, and start the loop over.

Something to keep in mind, which I alluded to, is that she's incredibly fast. If you have Kain do literally nothing but Jump, every time his action comes up, he will probably dispel a tornado every time (after she gets off Bolt3). Even Edge, our fastest member by far, acts only about 2/3 as fast as she does. She's not quite as mean as Ciriatto, but if you don't keep up with healing those Bolt3s, you'll probably lose here.

Porom's able to get a Slow off (which only works when she's not a tornado), so that makes her more manageable; she's basically 1:1 with Edge for turns now.

She has 30,000 HP, so it'll take a while; keep up your guard until you see her fade away. She's weak to Air (Kain's spears) and Ice (Ice-2, Cecil's Icebrand)...though magic will have no effect while she's wrapped up. And like Barbariccia before her, Thrown items can't miss, so feel free to chunk Fuma Shurikens at her at any point.

Eventually, though, she falls.

Golbez disappears, and Malacoda fades away.

Quote:
Cecil: And we're down to
one crystal... what now?
Things you shouldn't do: Go try to steal the other seven.

Quote:
Kain: Golbez can't use
the portal without all
eight crystals. As long
as we still have this one

hope is not lost. We can
still mount one last
counter-offensive and try
to get the rest back.
Okay, good start, but: Consider not taking the last crystal with you when you go.

Quote:
Cecil: Agreed. Let's talk
to the King.
And fade out, only to fade back in at the throne room.

Quote:
Cecil: Thank you, your
majesty.

Cecil: Suggestions?

Kain: The Fiends have all
been taken out, but
Golbez's army of monsters
is still formidable.

There's also the Red
Wings to worry about...
Cid: Thanks to Rosa's
sharpshooting skills, the

airship force has been
weakened quite a bit.
Edge: In that case, now
is the time to strike!

Palom: We take them out
while they're still weak...
Porom: ...before they have a
chance to regroup!
o-tab-o-tab-o-tab

Quote:
the crystals, and leave.
Kain, you're familiar
with the layout of the
tower. Edge, your Ninja

skills will also come in
handy for this mission.
Palom and Porom, we'll
probably need your magic.

Cid and Rosa, since
you did so well against
the airships earlier,
perhaps you can lead the

tank assault.
Rosa: No problem!
Cid: We'll show 'em
who's boss!
Yes, Cecil, you'll "probably" need literally the only person here who can cast Cure.

A bunch of idiots, that's who.

Kain's back and Rosa's out. He takes Edge's front row slot, as the ninja slips into the back to Throw full-time. I end up having to go to Tomra to pick up more Fuma Shurikens. On the way out, I talk to Luca.

This is how you can tell this game is fantasy; no child would ever understand why you broke their toy, even if the world literally depended on it.

Anyway, I'd include the Tower of Babil Redux in this update, but it's gonna take a while, so I'll cut things here. Next time, though!

Please look forward to it!

Man, even Golbez is a chump in this version...

Quote:

Rosa, on the other hand, can apparently shoot down airships with a bow, making her way more awesome in this version.

If she's that troublesome with all that Lightning-resist gear you've been picking up over the last couple of updates, I can only imagine how quickly you'd get zapped without it.

Did something get cocked up with the update? I feel like I'm only seeing half of the doll fight. Who is Ciriatto?

The doll fight is very short; there's no big doll.

Ciriatto was the Fiend of Shadow, from the last update.

Oh! I thought it checked and didn't see that name anywhere else, oops.

I'm surprised they kept a doll fight at all if it wasn't going to do something with it

Rosa's a natural born Legolas. The way I read it, she was sniping out thousands of airship crewmen while five slowpokes struggled to finish off one fiend.

As awkward and fanfic-y as this romhack is at times, I just wanted to say that I'm super enjoying this LP, turtle. I'm always excited to see a new post from you in this thread. Thanks for your hard work.

I haven't been mentioning it, but her Charge against a race weakness could easily hit for like 4K.

I have absolutely no problem believing she could take down the literal airships coming in.
