Something really fun is to create slightly raised turrets to fight against goblin sieges. Your marks dwarves can shoot down a couple Z-levels through little holes out of incoming invaders and it makes it really feel like a siiiiiiick siege

# = Solid, unmined wall. I highly, HIGHLY recommend having an engraver smooth them over, so that they can't be climbed up. Just in case.
(Empty Space) = just that. Empty space, a tile that has been mined out and nothing placed in it. It is walkable.
. = Open Pit. Channel these tiles out. Because there's a LOT of channeling, I'd highly recommend you finish channeling this top layer before you start on the next one down. Don't want any accidents.
^ = Weapon Trap. The classic loadout is with low-quality wooden spiked balls, or glass if you have sand on-site. Glass is preferred if only because a single tile of sand can produce unlimited sandbags, and once you get a magma forge set up, you need no fuel to churn out glass rapidly. Otherwise, it'll eat a TON of wood. Low-quality is preferred since the goal is to attack the goblins with as many low-damage hits as possible, since each attack is a separate chance for them to dodge--and either land in another trap or fall into the chasm. Low-quality is a must, because you don't actually want the weapons to strike the goblins, since the lethal blow is falling and not piercing. Plus, if a goblin is fatally struck by a spiked ball, the trap will jam until a dwarf cleans the corpse out.
+ = Hatch Covers, linked to the adjacent pressure plate. The tile should be channeled, obviously. Dwarves and goblins alike can walk across these... as long as they're closed. However...
& = Pressure Plate, set to trigger on all creature weights, excluding citizens. Pressure plates use the same tile in-game as other traps, but I used a different symbol in these plans because I can't color-code them in a [/CODE] block. The purpose of these little beauties is that once you step on it, the hatch cover tiles change from solid ground to open chasm, dumping any unfortunate goblins to their death and also cutting off access, causing pathfinding to turn around and head for the opposite exit. Which, of course, will repeat infinitely until there are no more goblins.

The above plans are for the topmost layer only. You'll also need to pick out about 11 z-levels below and channel them COMPLETELY. Any creature in the game, if it falls from 11 or more z-levels, instantly dies on impact, dismembering itself violently. Also, just like cage traps, this design is not 100% foolproof, since TRAPAVOID creatures just dance on by, avoiding the pressure plates and, obviously, the weapons themselves. The only creatures I know of that are TRAPAVOID are kobold thieves/ambushers, and "uninvited guests."

Kobolds can easily be foiled by use of a sentry behind the : pasture a cat or similar non-grazing animal (preferably gelded) behind fortifications, so that it can see but not interact with any passing creature. Kobolds are invisible until they pass within range of a citizen, which animals count as. Spotting one is enough to have a dwarf pull a stationed lever, hopefully one that causes violent death to anything in the general area of the patrolled area. You can automate it by use of bridges, linked to a pressure plate nearby. When the cat sees the kobold, it'll flee in the opposite direction, triggering the pressure plate and flattening the kobold.

Other "uninvited guests" are immune to bridges, so you'll want to send the military after them. Or drop a slab of rock on their heads. Either or.

For those who can't stand the interface but would like to manage a colony of malcontents, I highly recommend Prison Architect. It's lacking a little of the complexity of Dwarf Fortress, and you have somewhat more explicit goals, but you still get the feel of indirect management and a population that will start murdering at the drop of a hat.

1st Granite, 154

As I take a look across the great, bloody fields on the new year, I spot furry dog-like creatures. They're much bigger than the dogs we keep here, and if they're anything like the dogs here they've got a fine pair of chompers that would probably be unpleasant to be introduced to.

I order wood hauling to be temporarily suspended until we can be sure these giant dogs won't bother us.

16th Granite, 154

Alixsar rushes up to me as I'm picking through the food stockpile.

"The wolves are at our doorstep!"

"Wolves? Is that like elves but woolier?"

"The... giant... dogs."

"Why didn't you say so!?

I order the gate raised and lock the doors. It's unfortunate, but we can't risk anyone being outside while they're so close!

17th Granite, 154

I accident caused someone outside. With the doors locked and gate raised, LaularuKyrumo. Whoops. Well she shouldn't have been practicing sommersaults in the bloody rain now should she?

19th Granite, 154

The wolves depart to the south without incident. We open the gate to a confused LaularuKyrumo, who says she didn't even realize she had been locked outdoors for three days!

Well, I hope this is a well learned lesson for her: keep close to the entrance and don't be wandering around where you could put yourself in danger!

26th Granite, 154

LaularuKyrumo did not take my advice, choosing to wash some of the blood off herself in a pool of water southeast of our fort's entrance.

The problem was obvious once you really took a step back:

The further away you bathe, the greater the chances you'll get ambushed by a twisted horse monster.

LaularuKyrumo made a break up the small hill to our entrance, while I ordered entrances sealed. If she could outrun the creature, maybe we could keep it out.

Unfortunately this was a horse-creature, not a snail-creature, and quickly caught up to her. The fight is short.

I would say she was close but this is no time for jokes. I order the remaining door into the fort locked.

The beast bangs uselessly against our fortress's doors, neighs, and sets watch over our entrance.

27th Granite, 154

The distrubing horse-noises last less than a day. But we dare not go outside, least it's a horse-trick.

1st Slate, 154

We wait a few days and send Solitayre outside to ensure the coast is clear.

Solitayre's barely has time to confirm the horse-creature is gone before jovewolf rushes outside.

10th Slate, 154

We mine out a tomb for the late LaularuKyrumo. She has the honor of being the first dwarf to lose their life here at Okol Anam. It's nothing fancy, but it'll be a place to keep her stuff.

Her son, onimaruxlr is keeping it together.

Her husband, jovewolf, insists on being the one to bring the body to its resting place. He breaks down again twice before finally mustering the whiskey to properly bury her.

14th Slate, 154

The heavy mood in the fort is broken by good news:

Mightyblue has given birth to a boy, her sixth child!

She's names him Thinaran, "he who sculpts."

19th Slate, 154

As another heavy rain of blood descends on our fortress, migrants arrive.

Many, many migrants. So many I take only their names. I will once again after speak to them all individually later. Our fort has once again doubled in population.

Many of this wave of migrnts come with shocked looked on their faces, unable to properly understand why the sky is raining blood down upon them.

Others find themselves unable to move, requiring the sterner dwarves to help lead them out of the rain.

My quick tally of names and professions:

Octopus Prime - Engraver
Wolfgang - Ranger
Falselogic - Ranger
shivam - Ranger
McClain - Blacksmith
Sven - Gem Cutter
Kishi - Craftsdwarf
BEAT - Bone Carver
Pajaro Pete - Fishery Worker
Dizzy - Farmer
Zef - Cook
Ample Vigour - Farmer
Calorie Mate - Butcher
Paul le Fou - Dyer
Torzelbaum - Mechanic
Kirin - Bone Doctor
metmanmas - Shearer
Sprite - Spinner
Adrenaline - Ranger
Patrick - Leatherworker
Bongo Bill - Ranger
Googleshng - Clerk
Sarcasmorator - Ranger
MCBanjoMike - Farmer

Plus seven children.

31 new citizens. Clearly given the shocked looks on their faces, most were decieved by someone about what exactly they would be walking into!

22nd Slate, 154

The last migrant finally makes it indoors. Sheesh.

The dwarves come with a number of animals that will likely be slaughtered, along with two pet pigs. The other animals are young; I will allow them to graze outside and grow fat before slaughtering them.

28th Slate, 154

Gerad makes yet another macabre figurine, this one of a skeleton (with pet boar accessory).

1st Hematite, 154

It's been over a month since our last wave of migrants. I was prepared for perhaps a dozen new migrants, so 31 was challenging. Our citizens were up for it however, quickly crafting beds and furniture, and setting up new homes for our new comrades to live in.

A large area has been set up for our livestock. It isn't ready yet, but we're hoping we can grow some mushrooms in here that they can feed on, hopefully an appealing alternative to blood-covered grass.

A couple of new farm plots have been added too, to try and ensure we don't run out of food. The hall of traps continues to be expanded. I name one of the dogs "Bate" and have him settle at the end of the hallway.

Out workshop area has gotten several new additions as well. Stations to help make clothes, leather goods, soap and cut gems have been added. I've also added two wood furnaces, two smelters and two forges so we're ready to start making armour.

Our temple/office area has been mined out, and most of the loose stone has since been hauled away. Given how sour my fellow dwarves have been feeling, I shall make setting the temples up a proirity.

Despite the unexpectedly high number of migrants, our craftdwarves have managed to carve out accomodations for all of them. While we have the opportunity, I'll keep expanding out network of bedrooms so we can ensure all these dwarves who come in shocked from the rain will at least have a place to feel safe.

Finally of note, I have asked Brickroad and TheSL to start digging underground. We must see if there is flux stone here, and a source of water is necessary for our hospital.

This year promises to be more challenging than the last.

THE BIG JOBS POST

Now that our fortress is half full, I'd really like to start thinking about which dwarf is doing what! For most non-hauling tasks, you don't need or want *every* dwarf doing it, as you'll never properly train dwarves that way.

I mentioned in a previous post all the specific labours that dwarves can specialize in. With this post, I want audience input to make sure I've got the right dwarves in the right positions. This will not only help our fortress run smoothly, it'll help me when writing (as I'll know which dwarves to praise/blame even if I miss specific incidents).

But to not leave you all in the dark about your own dwarves, here is an alphabetical list of every adult dwarf in the fortress, and any Novice or better at. From there, I'd love it if anyone who wishes to apply for a particular position could let the thread know!

Being proficient in a skill is NOT required to apply! It simply shows what the game has given your dwarf thus far. Many of the dwarves with no skills listed are Rangers, who are most likely slightly trained in combat (notably as potential Marksdwarves):

Alixsar: High Master Grower
Awkward Grunt: Proficient Mason, Great Clothier
aturtledoesbite: Adequate Armorsmith
BEAT: Adequate Bone Carver
Blitzblast: Skilled Mechanic, Great Thresher
Brickroad: Legendary Miner
Calorie Mate: Adequate Butcher
Dawnswalker: Talented Mason, Novice doctor
Destil: Competent Carpenter
Eddie: High Master Miner
Galadrome: Skilled Carpenter
Gerad: Adequate Cook, Grand Master Stone Crafter
Kirin: Adequate Wound Dresser, Adequate Bone Doctor
Kylie: Adequate Miller, Accomplished Stone Crafter
LancerECNM: Talented Grower
McClain: Great Metalsmith
MetManMas: Adequate shearer
Mightyblue: Proficient Mason
Mogri: Proficient Brewer, Adequate Cook
Octopus Prime: Adequate Engraver
Patrick: Adequate Leather Worker
Paul le Fou: Adequate Dyer (-)
Sky Render: Great Carpenter, Competent Mason, Competent Mechanic
Solitayre: Proficient Carpenter
Son of Sinistar: Adequate Potash Maker, Legendary Stone Crafter
Sprite: Adequate Spinner
Sven: Adequate Gem Cutter
TheSL: Legendary Miner
Zef: Competent Cook

Dwarves with no profession skills of note:
Adrenaline, Ample Vigour, Bongo Bill, Dizzy, Falselogic, Googleshng, jovewolf, Kishi, MCBanjoMike, Pajaro Pete, Shivam, Taeryn, Wolfgang

The following job positions can be applied for. Leading candidates that have existing skill are listed in brackets, but ALL candidates will be considered. Please rank your three desired job choices. Candidates that are not chosen for a job will have first dibs on military positions (see below).

MINER - 4 POSITIONS AVAILABLE (Brickroad, TheSL, Eddie)
CARPENTER/WOOD CUTTER - 4 POSITIONS AVAILABLE (Solitayre, Sky Render, Galadrome, Destil)
ENGRAVER - 2 POSITIONS AVAILABLE (Octopus Prime)
MASON - 4 POSITIONS AVAILABLE (Sky Render, Dawnswalker, Mightyblue)
ANIMAL TRAINER - 1 POSITION AVAILABLE

BREWER - 3 POSITIONS AVAILABLE (Mogri)
COOK - 3 POSITIONS AVAILABLE
GROWER - 3 POSITIONS AVAILABLE (Alixsar, LancerECNM)
ARMORSMITH - 1 POSITION AVAILABLE (aturtledoesbite)
WEAPONSMITH - 1 POSITION AVAILABLE
GEM CUTTER - 2 POSITIONS AVAILABLE (Sven)
CLOTHIER/WEAVER - 2 POSITIONS AVAILABLE ((Awkward Grunt, Sprite)
LEATHER WORKER/BUTCHER/TANNER- 2 POSITIONS AVAILABLE (Patrick, Calorie Mate)

SIEGE ENGINEER - 1 POSITION AVAILABLE
WOOD BURNER - 2 POSITIONS AVAILABLE
FURNACE OPERATOR - 2 POSITIONS AVAILABLE
SOAP DWARF - 1 POSITION AVAILABLE

MILITARY SIGNUP

The following dwarves have shown/claimed some aptitude in the following weapons. As professions above, you DO NOT need to have existing skill in a weapon (the military is willing to train you).

If you wish to join, please state in the thread your preferred company. I will likely end up with 6 full squads (20 Marksdwarves and 10/10/10/10 of 4 out of the 5 other weapons. Sorry Wrestling fans!)

NOTE: Volunteers get glory and the best weapons/armor. Conscripts get shoved out into the horde of goblins first.

SWORDDWARVES:
Ample Vigour, Galadrome

MACEDWARVES:
Calorie Mate, Googleshng, McClain, Son of Sinistar

HAMMERDWARVES:
(none)

AXEDWARVES:

Happy summer holidays!

Siege Engineer!

I'm 14 now! I'm old enough! And it practically runs in the family!

Edit: Or I GUESS I could craft stone or do engraving. I GUESS.

I ded

at least I died in a fitting way

Also. I HIGHLY want to recommend making a spreadsheet of some kind to keep track of things like which dwarves are doing what jobs, how many dwarves are assigned to a particular job, the total amount of skill levels in a given job, etc. Back when I didn't have access to Dwarf Therapist in the 0.40 fort, it was the only way I could stay half-sane.

What do you mean no one wants to be a hammerdwarf? I will happily be a hammerdwarf. Screw that whole "food" business.

Well, less that no one wants to be a hammer dwarf and more like no one has any training in it.

I will begin forging silver war hammers once I'm back for you!

Sworddwarf is definitely what I'd like to do! Before the proper military is set up, however, carpentry will tide me over until the full time trainin'/slayin'
