I am imagining this as a classic double-take gag. Or the other variety where someone walks past the window like they didn't see what was going on then stop and quickly backs up to look out the window.

Default part 1/2

Chapter 6: Love Is Blind

Last time on Let's Play Final Fantasy IV: Unprecedented Crisis, we helped a ninja get revenge for his parents, so now he's sticking with us.

Down here in the Eblan hideout, the item shop is the first to sell HiPotions, so I get a decent stock of those. The weapon shop sells the Ashura Katana, which Edge already has one of, as well as the Dagger Dagger, Blind Dagger, and Air Dagger (he has the first of which). There's a Flame Sword as well that we don't need, and it also sells Shurikens for 100 gil a pop. I pick up an Air Dagger and a decent stack of Shurikens; I don't intend on running out for a while, and as cheap as they are, I'd be a fool not to.

The Armor shop has Gold Shields, which I have too many of already, Flame Armor, which Cecil has and Cid gets, and Judo Clothes, which I pick up for Edge.

The rest of the hideout is unchanged, though I don't remember if there was a save point here in the original. If not...well, there's a save point here now. A guard blocks the path out of here, so we go talk to him.

Quote:
The tunnel is complete!
We now have a back door
into the enemy's head-
quarters!

Edge: Excellent work!

Cecil: So what's our plan
of attack?
Yang: The tower will
likely be well guarded...

Edge: The soldiers will
create a distraction
outside while we sneak in
through the back, rescue

your friend, and take out
Golbez once and for all.

Yang: Your highness, with
all due respect, with
your parents gone and you
leading the task force,

your soldiers lack a
leader.

Edge: You're right... but
this mission will require
the skills of a Ninja...

Yang: Your highness, I am
a high monk of Fabul.
Perhaps I could lead the
soldiers into battle...

...by your leave of course.

Edge: Agreed! Thank you,
Yang!

Yang: Of course!
And here, Yang leaves the party. This is just as well; we had too many people wanting the front line anyway. Edge arguably would rather not, but his ranged options all require resources at the moment, and his weapons are going to be handy.

The guard moves out of the way, and we're free to continue to the Tower of Babil.

There's not really that much to say about the pre-dungeon cave here. Aside from chest contents here and there, it's functionally unchanged. Speaking of chest contents, though...

This trapped chest, which contains a Blood Sword in the base game...

...contains a Power Staff here. Rydia can evoke this to cast Berserk on someone, which can be situationally useful.

Getting through the cave, we come out to the back side of the Tower of Babil.

You hear a distant "Zot"!

Edge uses his ninja skills to get us inside (and can use those same skills to get us out if need be).

Locked? Hmm, maybe we'll find a key later on. The Ice Liz and IceBeast enemies we find scattered about are severely weak to Cecil's Flame Sword, dying in a single hit. In fact, most things here die to one hit from at least one of our frontliners, so this isn't a bad place to level if you find yourself struggling. Cid gets a Mythril Hammer in here, but I keep the Gaia Hammer close by because evoking it provides a great way to deal with flan-type enemies.

Rydia hits level 25 here, which lets her learn the Sylph summon. Some of you might know the bug in the original game where, if you move Sylph to the top-right corner of Rydia's summon list, it costs 0 MP for some strange reason. They couldn't fix this bug, so they implemented a workaround; it now always costs 0 MP, but its delay is increased greatly and its power diminished. To give you some numbers: In the original game, it has a delay of 1 and a power of 15 ([Elem]2 spells have 3 delay and 16 power). Here, it has a delay of 6 and a power of 5.

Since it heals the party, it's arguably still worth casting, given our situation. A pack of Slimes, in particular, is a great place to unload Sylph; they do negligible damage, and each casting of Sylph will heal the party for about 100 HP each. Though, waiting for it to be cast each time gets tiring; fortunately, you're almost certainly playing this on an emulator, so put that turbo button to use.

Eventually, we reach a save point, and a few steps past that...

Quote:
I am Sandy!
I'm Cindy!
And Mindy!
We're the Magus Sisters!!

Sorry but your quest will
be over here.
Take our Delta Attack
and farewell!!

The Magus Sisters are, hit point for hit point, completely unchanged. The difference here is in our own party. Where in the original you have Paladin Cecil, Yang, Cid, and Tellah, here we trade out the Paladin for a Dark Knight, the Karate Monk for a Ninja, and the Sage for a Summoner.

In other words, nothing really changes.

Nothing at all. ...okay, in truth, it's actually much easier here; Rydia's summons can't get reflected, Edge's Shurikens are murder, and if all else fails, the attack items are pretty good in Cid's hands, given his large HP (if you're desperate, he can Dash to finish off one last sister pretty easily).

They fade away, and we continue on behind them, where an old friend waits.

Quote:
Kain: Cecil!?

Kain: How did you get in
here!?

...... ... Did anyone see you?

Edge: Never mind how we
got in!

Cecil: Those three girls
were the only ones who
saw us, but we defeated
them.

Kain: The Magus Sisters...
...then Barbariccia will
soon find out.

Rydia: Barbie... who?

Kain: Barbariccia, the
Fiend of Air. She's
guarding Rosa as we
speak. Look... Cecil...

I'm sorry about earlier,
but I need Golbez to
think I'm on his side...

Cid: A sleeper agent,
huh? But how can we trust
you?

Kain: There's no time for
talk. Rosa is in the
next room. If Barbariccia
finds you here she'll

probably kill her... and
you!

Kain: Here, take this.

Quote:
Kain: You guys rescue
Rosa, I'll take care of
the Air Fiend.
Kain heads inside the door.

Quote:
Edge: Think we can
actually trust this
joker?

Cid: Well, he did just
give us the master key to
the tower......

Cecil: What other choice
do we have? Come on,
let's hurry!
Then we run in after Kain, going to free Rosa. Except...Barbariccia isn't here?

We unlock Rosa's chains...only for us to realize that Barbariccia was the one locked up!

...how did Cecil not notice this before unchaining her? It's not like it was an iron maiden or something.

Quote:
Kain: Barbariccia!?

Barbariccia: Good eyes,
Romeo... your lady friend
tricked me and trapped me
here.

But thanks to you I'm
free again! Oh-hohohoho...
Come on Kain, let's
trash these losers.

Kain: The only loser here
is you!

Anyway, now we fight Barbariccia! She's faster and has more HP than she used to, but otherwise her gimmick is mostly the same, and Kain's with us now.

Shuriken can't be evaded, so they will work even if she's wrapped up in a tornado. She no longer inflicts Gradual Petrify now, but she does cast the Tnado spell (no one is surprised). And she can still use Weak to set someone's HP to critical, but a HiPotion patches that up real quick. Paradoxically, Barbariccia is weak to Air, so Edge's Air Dagger and Kain's Lances are very effective here.

As such, with only two tornado cycles, she bites the dust.

With that, Barbariccia disappears, and we get the Air crystal. Those of you keeping track at home may now realize that we have all four crystals. And if you weren't, well...

Quote:
Cecil: That's the last
crystal! Kain, do you
know what Golbez wanted
with these?

Kain: Yes. They open the
way to the moon.

Cecil: The... ......what?
Y'know, that's about as good a reaction as you can expect. Complete bewilderment.

Quote:
Kain: The moon. As in,
the one in the sky.
Apparently, it contains
the secret to such great

power as has never been
imagined. This tower can
generate a portal to the
moon, but it requires the

power of the crystals.

Cecil: Now that we have
them all, we can use it
ourselves to beat him
there and keep him from

getting all that power!

Kain: Indeed!
Ooooooor, and hear me out guys

We could take them and run.

Quote:
Cecil: What about Rosa?

Kain: I don't know how
she got out, but she
couldn't have gone far.
Taken out of context, Kain, that almost sounds like you want to capture her again. HMMMMMM.

Quote:
Cecil: Well then what
are we waiting for?
Let's go!
Kain officially rejoins us at this point; his equipment is as good as anything we've seen so far, so there's no reason to give him anything different unless you bought a second Flame Sword and don't like his Thunder Spear. With the key Kain gave us, we can unlock that door we found near the entrance, so we have to go all the way back down.

I won't bore you with the details. We unlock the door and head inside.

Across the bridge... (Warning: The enemy encounters on this bridge are a lot harder than they were outside and qualify as mini-bosses at this point.)

We find Rosa in what looks like a crystal room of sorts!

Quote:
Cecil: Rosa! There you
are!

Rosa: Oh am I ever glad
to see you!...

Quote:
Cid; Hoo boy, getting
hot in here!

Rosa: Cid!

Cid: Rosa, please...
call me Grandpa.
Gonna pause for a bit here. I don't think I've ever fully understood the family tree between Rosa and Cid. Can someone explain it to me?

Anyway, moving on.

Quote:
Rosa: And Kain!

Rosa: You sure gave us a
scare back at Fabul! But
it'll be useful having a
spy on our side...
When did she find out about this??? Kain clearly never bothered to actually check on Rosa, so this is presumably the first time they're getting to talk since Fabul.

ANYWAY.

Quote:
Kain: I still think the
only way we're going to
beat Golbez is from the
inside... but in order to

work, it has to look
convincing. I promise, no
matter how bad it looks,
I'm on your side.

Rosa: I understand.

Kain: Hey Rosa... How did
you trick Barbariccia?

Rosa: Let's just say, I
used my girlish charms......

Kain: ...

Quote:
Kain: Only you, Rosa...

Rosa: Heehee!
I'm just gonna let that one speak for itself...

Quote:
Rosa: And little Rydia!
How are you, sweetheart?

Rydia: I'm not afraid
anymore! And I'm gonna
use my summons to put
Golbez back in his place!

Rosa: I don't believe
we've been introduced...

Edge: Eblan's prince
Edge at your service,
my lady!

Rosa: Eblan... Your
soldiers are attacking
outside. They're putting
up a good fight but I'm

afraid they may not be a
match for Golbez's army...

Edge: They understand the
risks. Besides, Yang is
an outstanding commander.

Rosa: That he is!

Edge: In any case, the
battle is a distraction
to allow us to sneak in!

Cecil: And now that we
have, and we know you're
safe, the plan is to use
the crystals to activate

the portal to the moon,
get there ahead of
Golbez, and keep him away
from the power there.

Kain: I'll keep watch at
the back entrance...

Rosa: ...And I'll take the
front.

Cid: Alright! Let's get
'er fired up!
Kain and Rosa walk off to block the doors watch the entrances, and it's our job to put the crystals on their pedestals.

Once that's done, we head to the center.

Quote:
Kain: I'll stay here and
do my best to stall
Golbez.

Cecil: As you wish. Til we
meet again...

To the moon!

...

...

...did we forget to flip a switch or something?

Quote:
Cecil: I don't understand...

Why isn't anything
happening?...

Cid: Earth, fire, air,
water... They're all in
place. What could we be
missing?

Rydia: ...Heart?
Rydia, dear, you've been watching too much TV.

Golbez walks in from above!

Quote:
I see you brought me some
gifts.

How thoughtful!

All this time I thought I
would have to fight you
for them, but no, you've
simply handed them over...

Four of the eight
crystals...
Dun dun DUUUUUUUUUUUN! (so if this is where babil makes the portal... where are the other four pedestals anyway)

Quote:
Kain: Master, what do you
mean? Certainly there are
only four crystals...

Golbez: On the contrary, my
loyal lieutenant. The
four to which you refer
are only the crystals of

light. There are four
more crystals... those of
darkness, found in the
underworld.

Kain: Underworld?
Golbez: Indeed... there is
more to this tower, and
indeed the world itself,

than you seem to realize.
There is an entire world
underground, hidden from
view... this tower connects

the two. Here, allow me
to demonstrate!
A clicking sound.

Next time...the underworld? Please look forward to it!

They're making themselves appear significantly less competent than in the original, which is no mean feat.

I mean, c'mon, you know Kain's mental state went from "Yeah, sure I'll help Cecil, he's mah bro!" to "FUCK YOUUUUUU" the moment Rosa kissed Cecil.

Kain sure had no compunctions about killing one of his co-workers in a hurry.

I always assumed Cid as Rosa's "grandpa" was an awkward translation situation where it was meant as a term of endearment, kind of like calling a family friend "Uncle Cid." Near as I can tell they are not actually related in any way.

The structure of this is super interesting and I kinda want to play it (the only thing giving me pause at this point is not having a healer tbh). I don't know FFIV as well as, well... probably everybody here, but I know you go underground way before all the stuff in this update. I'm pretty impressed with this hack so far...

Until the later half of the game in vanilla you don't really need healing in battle. Just enough potions to fill up in the menu should be enough. I am curious what it's going to do in the back half. I have ... predictions, but I don't know if I want to call it or not.

I want to say the number of dungeons is the same, but the structure is different. Normally after Fabul you have the shipwreck>Mysidia>Mt. Hobs sequence that then dumps you back at Baron. Then you do the Waterway, get the Enterprise, and then you go to T(o)roia and do the Dark Elf sequence and on to the Tower of Zot from there.

It's not that far removed, really. The main difference is going to Eblan first and fighting Rubicant.

Original: Cagnazzo -> Cave Magnes -> Tower of Zot -> Underground
UC: Cagnazzo -> Misty Mountains -> Eblan -> Tower of Zot Babil -> Underground

EDIT: And yeah, as Mightyblue pointed out, UC Eblan's essentially made up for with Mt. Ordeals in the original.

Wait so they don't make you go through the magnet cave at all? Or does that come later in the hack? I hate that place even if it's not super difficult...

the magnet cave is annoying because it makes you do a lot of menu bullshit and deal with adding stuff to an already limited inventory. It's not too hard to just run from every fight, so it's not even a big "challenge" so much as it just makes you take off all your armor to get through it just to put it all back on. It almost would have been better if they made you fight a series of mini bosses or something in on the way so it actually felt like a worthy challenge instead of jsut a pain in the ass.

I think Rosa calling Cid grandpa is a reference to another RPG in which that happens. Rydia drops a Captain Planet reference a few screens later, so why not something closer to home?

If Kain is still on Golbez's side why did Kain help kill Barbarricia and why is Golbez OK with it?

Why did Golbez and Kain blurt out their knowledge and plans in front of everyone?

I guess if you read the scene as Kain still being a 'good guy' he is goading Golbez into revealing his plan. I agree it is out of character for Golbez to be that stupid and careless.

Aside from that, I could see Golbez (and Kain, if still on Golbez's side) considering Barbarricia's death an acceptable price for getting the crystals delivered to them. That said, if Kain was still on his side, Kain could have teamed up with Barbarricia against Cecil's group and kept one more ally alive. (At least it's possible to imagine this story logic, but I suspect the ROM hackers didn't have the skill to program this battle if it wasn't already in the game.)

It would look weird for Cecil to turn into a Paladin and back just for a kiss.

Since I'm not a programmer, I sometimes wonder how much games can be modified without breaking. Like, can the game engine only handle certain hero party and enemy party combinations? Does altering the sequence of events or putting save points in new places risk making portions of game state not saveable? What is the relative difficulty of altering text, enemy stats, map layouts, cutscene animations, graphics, music and sound effects?

The biggest issue I would see with making a hack like this is the space limitations in the game data due to originally being on a cartridge. It's probably not possible to 'add' many new things to the game without removing something else to compensate. Turtle alluded to this with the limited number of reaction 'scripts' available in the game. I find myself wondering if any maps in the game had to be deleted to make room for the Misty Mountains.

There are fan translation patches of FF4 and Secret of Mana that increase the ROM size, but in general I would expect you are right. The game's programming may expect there to be only so much ROM and not be able to make use of much more without lower level programming that is beyond the skill of these ROM hackers.

Sounds like I get to write a bonus update at some point to go over ff4kster, because I'm 99% sure everything this hack's done was through that (considering the hacker made it, and all...).

...not that I know all of its features, but I can explain most of it, I think.

EDIT: As for Golbez spilling out all his plans, I guess you could say he didn't really see Cecil's party as a threat (since he's probably already started claiming the crystals of the underground), but even so... yeah I think he done goofed up there.

Rosa's mom is alive and well and will even ask you to go rescue her if you go see her at certain points in the plot.

It's Cecil and Kain who were orphaned and adopted by the King (and therefore, I guess, the county, making their joining the military ... weirder), and Cid has a paternal (grand-paternal?) relationship with them. So telling Rosa to call him "grandpa" is sort of like like when your boy/girlfriend's father tells you to call him "dad," maybe?

It's all confusing.

Chapter 7: Oh Right, This Is A Let's Play

Welcome back! Cecil finds himself waking up in an unfamiliar land.

Quote:
Rosa: Where's Rydia??

Edge: She must not have
made it...

Cid: Poor thing... if
anyone had to go it
should have been me...

Cecil: Rydia... wherever you
are...

I won't rest until I find
you!
It seems Rydia is nowhere to be found. Cecil seems to be the only one who thinks she even survived.

We find ourselves in a world of lava, with the Tower of Babil at our backs. If we try to reenter the Tower...

He moves pretty fast. Either way, we're not going back in for now.

Rosa is back in our party, and if you're smart (i.e., not me), you'll remember to give her equipment before you get into a fight. If you were prescient enough to unequip Rydia (I wasn't), Rosa can use the same armor she did; otherwise, she gets whatever's lying around.

Fortunately, it's not a very long walk to this cave over here. Inside, we find dwarves! This hasn't been changed much from the original game; it even has the life pot right inside the cave. Let's head to the throne room.

But before that.

This hack reimplements the Silver Apples that got dummied out of FF2. Instead of something silly like AgApple, they just call it an HP-Apple, which gets the point across. Each one increases the user's max HP by 100, permanently. I don't use them quite yet.

Quote:
King: Pleased to meet you,
Cecil. I am Giott, King
of the dwarves.

Cecil: I come to warn you
of an imminent threat. A
man named Golbez is after
the crystals.

Giott: Fear not, we dwarves
are mighty warriors! Our
soldiers and tanks will
protect our Bolt crystal!

Edge: I don't doubt your
soldiers' abilities, but
they can't be everywhere
at once... we must protect

the other crystals too.

King: It wouldn't hurt to
have more help! You and
your friends investigate
the other crystals and

keep them from Golbez.

Rosa: Where exactly are
the other crystals?

Giott: The Ice crystal is
in the ice mines of
Tomra, a sovereign nation
ruled by King Santos.

The Shadow crystal is in
the Feymarch, the land
where summoned creatures
live.

The Holy crystal is in
the Shrine to Bahamut,
God of Summons.

Cid: How can we get to
these places?

Giott: The tanks can't go
over the magma, but we
did find a flying ship
that crashed nearby...

If you can make it work,
it's yours!

Cid: Leave it to me!

Giott: One other thing...

Giott: We found these human
children and took them
in. Despite how they seem
they are powerful mages!

They may be useful to you
in your quest.

Cecil: Um...

Quote:
Palom: Mysidian genius
Palom at your service!

Quote:
Porom: Forgive my brother
and his arrogance. My
name is Porom. Pleased
to meet you, sir.

Cecil: Did you say...
Mysidian?

Porom: Yes. My brother and
I were aboard a ship on
its way to Baron on a
diplomatic mission when a

giant sea monster
attacked us!

Palom: Then my bungling
sister miscast a Warp
spell...

Cecil: Alright, come along
kids.

With that, we go to inspect this crashed ship!

Cid tinkers with the ship in various places.

He ropes the twins into helping him out.

Quote:
Those tanks could use an
upgrade as well... I think
I'm gonna stay here and
help out.

Cecil: I'm sure the
dwarves will appreciate
the help.
Rosa: Take care!
Cid is about to head off, but stops himself.

Quote:
Cid: Wait, we haven't
named the airship!

Palom: Well, it's red...

Porom: ...And we got it from
the dwarves... so...

*sigh*

Quote:
Cid: Red Dwarf it is!
Take good care of her!

And now we have an airship! But first, we got new party members, so let's check them out!

Palom and Porom start at level 20; not bad, but they're noticeably behind the others. I want to point out that Edge came in at 25. But let's ignore that for now; we have actual White and Black Mages!

I find it hilarious that, aside from the five minutes we had Tellah in our party, this is the first time we're seeing the Cure spell. The twins will, given enough levels, learn every single spell in their respective school of magic.

Palom, as usual, can equip Rods and Daggers. Porom, meanwhile, equips Staves and...

Hammers! This is almost unilaterally a bad idea, of course, but I suppose the option exists.

Let's look at their commands. Twin, as you remember, consumes both Palom's and Porom's actions to cast a powerful spell. As the Training Room told us, it's based on their HP. And yes, it costs MP. Palom's unique command is Focus, which is similar to the Bluff command he's gotten in most non-FF2 ports; it temporarily increases his WIS by 16. Porom, meanwhile, has the Bonk! command. She can only use it while equipped with a hammer, and it has equal chance of casting Arise, Haste, Blink, or Esuna on the target, for 0 MP. It's pretty terrible. Don't use hammers.

Anyway, this is a little early, but I'll call the update here.

Next time...you decide! As King Giott listed above, we have three crystals to check up on, and we can go to any of them in any order. For those of you who glossed over it, I'll excise that part of his speech here:
  • The Ice crystal is in the ice mines of Tomra, a sovereign nation ruled by King Santos.
  • The Shadow crystal is in the Feymarch, the land where summoned creatures live.
  • The Holy crystal is in the Shrine to Bahamut, God of Summons.

Get to it! First place to three votes (or whichever's highest when I start the next update) is where I go! Please look forward to it!

I suppose I appreciate the hacker trying to fill the hole of giving names and locations for each Dark crystal, but at this point this version is feeling less like a 'new' take on the story and more like fan fiction. Also after the last update I don't trust Cecil and friends to be collecting any more crystals.

Rydia is probably in the Feymarch so that's my vote.
