Default Drop it Dirtbag! TT enters the World of Law Enforcement, Let's Play Police Quest

What a gritty a realistic game this should be! I mean look at that cover! Bullet holes, a police cruiser, a bearded man running from cops, and crappy lens flare!

So what is Police Quest, Dr. Wikipedia?

Quote:
Police Quest: In Pursuit of The Death Angel, released in 1987, is an adventure game whose gameplay is centered around interacting with the environment to resolve a series of scenarios. These largely revolve around typical police work, such as securing crime scenes and recovering stolen vehicles, plus some important duty procedures. The game required the player to type in the desired actions, such as opening doors, pressing buttons or firing one's gun.

The lack of "traditional" puzzles made the game stand out at the time of release, although it also resulted in some criticism of the dry police work. Unlike many games of this genre, the style of play depends largely on a strict adherence to standard police rules and procedure. Failure to abide to proper procedure typically leads to the player being penalized on points, or having his character killed.
The game was made with the help of a real cop! Police brutality pioneer, Daryl F. Gates I mean retired CHP officer, Jim Walls!

This game is not like other Sierra games in that much of the time you're just copying stuff out of the giant manual that came with the game. And hopefully doing it in the right order. They came up with all sorts of ways to kill you for not typing things correctly or not following procedure. This game is the cure for kids who wanted to be cops but didn't realize it was nothing more than following boring rules all the time and only rarely shooting dirtbags!

Anyway, stayed tuned for the first episode! I've got to find my manual!

I remember getting stuck in this game because I couldn't figure out how to dye my hair. (For some reason, your hair color doesn't change until you rinse the dye out.) I mean, I eventually got over that hump, but still.

I demand you make out with the traffic offender.

I'm having trouble reconciling "experience what it's really like to be a cop" and "I got stuck trying to dye my hair".

...I'm going to guess that really being a cop is different than I think.

Keep in mind, this IS a Sierra adventure game. Even though there's a lot of police procedure, there's still a fair few puzzles that go outside the realms of what an actual police officer is likely to have to do. Just be thankful there are no pies or yetis involved. (Yes, I still have not forgiven them for that puzzle in KQ5.)

The worst part is that the instructions are on the bottle.

Default A Little about Scenic Lytton

Taken from the Lytton Chamber of Commerce:

I don't know where the ad-copy people got over 100 streets and 4 highways out of that map...

Well I can tell you right away that this city isn't very authentic from my experience. Every city I've ever been to calls 7th Avenue "Broadway".

EDIT: As for the ad copy, I bet they were cheating by counting every single intersection as a separate street, and each on-ramp as a "highway". And even then, they can't do math. There's 8 on-ramps (2 per side * 4 streets), and 96 intersections/corners (8 horizontal * 12 vertical).

I guess the intro is meant to be serious and possibly intimidating, but it all gives me is a vague desire to zap trash. This can't be bad! Onward!

I maintain that the worst thing about that puzzle was that you could eat the pie yourself when you were hungry. Trial-and-error when you're missing the right item is the pits.

Default Welcome to the LPD!

Now figure it out yourself!

Police Quest begins in the central room of the Lytton Police Headquarters. That's us, Sonny Bonds, standing there stupidly.

Not that informative. Let me fill you in the top barred window is evidence the top right door leads to the briefing room, the bottom right leads to the locker the top left door leads somewhere, I forget... Anyway as a closeted homosexual Sonny hits up the lockers first:

frustrated by society at every turn, aren't you Sonny?

As we walk towards our locker, I assume Sonny has one, our fellow cops can't help but blab at us:

"Hot"

Anyway, Sonny heads to his locker. It's the one in the lower right and OPENS it:

Inside he finds:

Default Looting is the central tenet of Adventurism

TAKE ALL

With are locker deflowered we return to the locker room and the hot blonde in the shower. Sonny goes through his briefcase. An adventurer is never done looting:

TAKE ALL

Now with Sonny all geared up and ready to go he heads back to the central room:

Then, Sonny heads into the Briefing Room:

With a few minutes to spare Sonny picks up the paper lying on the table and thumbs through it:

"I love bird watching too! Oh, I had no idea I was nominated for Office of the Year!"

As soon he finished the paper the briefing begins. Initiated by a strange disembodied voice:

Having played before Sonny knows where to stand:

Let's get this briefing on:

Default Hitting the Mean Streets!

Sonny jots down some NOTES from the briefing (you have to do this to get a perfect score your notes don't have to say anything in order to get the points) Then checks his box:

Then heads out for his patrol:

As per Lytton Police Department Operating Procedures Sonny walks around his vehicle before entering it:

He gets into the car, grabs his nightstick and goes out on patrol:

This is the driving interface the important thing to remember in these screen is the location, noted at the top of the screen as C3. This is your regular grid with the alphabet on the vertical and numbers on the horizontal. We're just going to drive around randomly until we get a radio call:

If you were paying extra attention to the pic before last you've already located our 11-83 (traffic collision - no details). Sonny heads there now:

Default What a Mess

LOOK MAN

LOOK MAN

USE RADIO

Officer Bonds approaches the crowd of on-lookers and asks if anyone saw anyting, TALK MAN

TALK MAN

USE RADIO

Shortly thereafter a detective and the Sarge show up:

With the Sarge and Homicide on the scene Sonny gets back on his beat:

Remember Steve? He left a note in our box about meeting at a cafe? Probably because he yearns for Sonny's hot, hot man bod. Guess we better head over! Find out all the details about their hot, gay public bathroom sex next episode!

Police Quest is the Sierra adventure game series that I have the least experience with. There's a real weird whiplash in mood, you have the super realistic procedures you have to do as a cop, dealing with I assume a drug kingpin, yet there's a bunch of silly little jokes.

Even better, I was looking at wikipedia for more information about the game, apparently Sonny is a 15 year veteran of the police department. How long was Jim Walls a police officer? 15 years.

not in san francisco, oakland or san jose, the three cities that would have been closest and most familiar to the sierra types.

I was hoping to find some repository on the internet who had already done this for me. But so far no such luck. At the end of the go through I might, repeat I might, go though and try to find as many game overs as I can.

There's just a lot of ways to die in this game and a lot of ways to lose so we'll see...

Honestly, the deaths/game overs that I'm more interested in seeing are the ones where it's due to not following proper police procedure, since it doesn't look like the effect comes through in the gameplay (like when you inspected the tires, you didn't see a problem with one and have to fix it).
