Default Most-Best Robots... FOREVER Top 50 Robots List

What's up, Ladies and gents! Welcome, one and all, to the final tally for the Most-Best Robots, FOREVER! Countdown. You've all done a bang-up job submitting lists and we've tallied and tabulated them until we figured out, democratically, what the best damned robots ever are.

First off, big thanks to Loki for... actually tallying and tabulating all those numbers so I needn't tax my brains with arithmatic, and also for handling all the pretty, pretty pictures on them title cards.

Points were broken down as follows; whoever placed #1 on your list got 25 points, 24 points for second place and so on down the list. Whoever was ranked 25th got one measely point, and if you had more then 25 entries, we privately made fun of you for not following the instructions. But first, here's everyone who cared enough about democracy to vote:

As for the rest of you, I don't know WHY you chose to hate Democracy or our Wonderful Mechanical Friends, but I guess you just must.

And now, without further adieu, let's LIST SOME ROBOTS!

Daneel Olivaw is a character in a good many of Isaac Asimovs stories, notably the Robot and Foundation series. He was created as the first robot that is all but completely indistinguishable from a normal (if unusually nice) human being, and is modelled after his creator, Dr. Sarton. After Dr. Sartons death, he partnered up with the human detective Elijah Baley to solve the murder, the two eventually become friends, after Elijah gets over his robo-racism.

Besides the usual Threee Laws that govern how robots act in relation to humans, Olivaw also follows the Zeroth Law; compelling him to do whatever is necessary in order to protect humanity as a whole. Thousands of years later, in the Foundation series, Olivaw is still alive and well and has become the caretaker for the galaxy-spanning human empire.

Daneel Olivaw has been played by John Carson and David Collings for the BBC adaptations of The Caves of Steel and The Naked Sun.

The T-1000 is a recurring villain in the Terminator franchise, showing up prominently in Terminator 2 and having smaller roles in other parts of the franchise. Unlike other models of Terminator where robotic bodies are covered in human-like flesh, the T-1000 is entirely built of Liquid Metal (how you can build a robot out of liquid, I do not know) and, owing to its malleable body, is capable of imitating other forms perfectly, ranging from other people to household appliances. Besides this, it's also virtually impossible to injure as its body heal damage almost instantly and can reshape its body-parts into crude weapons. It's not completely indestructible though, as extreme temperatures and corrosion can damage its ability to hold its body together.

In Terminator 2, the T-1000 attempted to kill the (just, just awful) John Connor while his mother was in an insane asylum for insisting that future killbots were trying to kill her and her messiah son. This plan failed, as most plans did when opposed by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the T-1000 got dumped into molten steel for its trouble.

A different T-1001 Terminator appears in the sequel series The Sarah Connor Chronicles to act as an antagonist whose motives are never made particularly clear. And never WILL be made clear since the show was cancelled before anything could be explained. OH WELL!

In the 2015 film Terminator Genisys, the T-1000 showed up again and has, apparently, been trying to kill Sarah Connor without much successs since the mid-70s. This one gets dissolved by acid.

The T-1000 that everyone voted for was played by Robert Patrick, the one who didn't make much sense was played by Shirley Manson and the one who was just awful at his job was played by Lee Byung-hun

Ultron is a recurring enemy of Marvels The Avengers, and of team-founder Hank Pym in particular. Pym originally built Ultron to help bring peace to the world, however, owing to the fact that an entomologist really has no business building intelligent robot in general, and guys with severely messed up brain chemistry REALLY shouldn't be basing any kill bots on his own mental patterns, things went south pretty quickly. Ultron very much DOES want to bring peace to the earth and figures that the best way to make sure the planet is nice and peaceful is to first make sure there's nothing alive on it.

When defeated, Ultron tends to download his programs into a waiting shell, which he tends to rebuild, stronger than before in his on-going mission to wipe out all organic life. Owing to the fact that his personality is based (however loosely) on Hank Pyms, he has a bizarre relationship with his wife, Janet who Ultron considers to be both his mother and his one true love. At one point he built a sexy robot version of his mother he named Jocasta to be his wife, just to toss subtlty entirely out the window. At one point he also rebuilt HIMSELF into a sexy robot version of his mom. He also built the saddest robot, The Vision, who wound up joining the Avengers, and GOOD RIDDENCE.

Ultron was played by James Spader in the film Avengers: Age of Ultron, and by so, so many people in various cartoons over the years.

Alita (sometimes called Gally) is the main character in the manga series Battle Angel Alita, who works as both a bounty-hunter and as a professional Motorball player. Her extreme skill at beating-the-hell-out-of-things lead to an entire military division made up of dozens of copies of her. She was nicknamed Gally after the cat owned by her friend Ido, who found and repaired her.

The wikipedia page surprisingly doesn't offer much of a character biography here, but it mentions that she's a master of the cyborg martial-art of Panzer-Kunst and at one point "begins fighting with the giant Great Martian King dream robot". So obviously this is a comic I need to be reading.

Okay, full disclosure here, I didn't play BoF4 for more then a couple of hours, and Wikipedia is NO help whatsoever, but Loki loves the CRAPS out of that game and he was able to help out pretty nicely; take it away Loki!

Quote:
11:00 Lokii So you get to this town p early in the game.
11:01 Lokii The empire across the mud ocean is using a Curse Cannon to destroy enemy towns.
11:01 Lokii The curses make them impossible to live in
11:01 Lokii They're basically A-Bombs!
11:01 Lokii This one town was cursed and now there's a team of cleaner-upers who wear super heavy armor and go in and do what they can to salvage.
11:02 Lokii One of these cleners is Ershin.
11:02 Lokii She's like heavily animated robot armor
11:02 Lokii Has a cape
11:02 Lokii Can fire her fist like a missle
11:02 Lokii Glowing robot eyes
11:02 Lokii She also talks in a weird 3rd person
11:03 Lokii Like at one point she helps you through the curse and Nina says "tanks for the help Ershin."
11:03 Lokii And she responds
11:03 Lokii "Don't thank Ershin, thank Ershin. Thank you Ershin."
11:04 Lokii This is because she talks in the 3rd person about herself, but is also refering to the life-force that resides in and animates her.
11:04 Lokii Series regular Deus/Blue (the sexy snake lady)
11:04 Lokii Was sealed in magically in this armor.
11:04 Lokii And her inharent magical power eventually gave the armor sentience.
11:05 Lokii For some reason Ershin calls Deus Ershin as well.
11:05 Lokii It's confusing but it gives the character flavor.
THANKS, LOKI!

Sweet. I couldn't get Alita on the heroines list, but by god she is definitely a best cyborg. (Octo, yes, you should totally read Battle Angel. The first series is aces, and while the second series may test your patience for tournament-style shenangians it still remains wonderfully insane most of the time.)

Also lovely to see Ershin, even though it looks like I ended up just barely not getting her on my list. I should have booted another shoo-in for her, but it's okay since she made it anyway.

I'm also almost surprised Olivaw wasn't higher up, since a bunch of you folks liked your literary sources so much last time around. I think he's one of only two on my list from primarily prose sources, and I'm pretty sure the other is making it too.

T-1001 is not T-1000!

Fun(?) Fact #1: Olivaw was on three individual lists. More so than the others, this one really is going to be a popularity contest.

Fun(!) Fact #2: Up until the last minute, Ershin was sitting in the low sixties. But Breakman's 11th hour entry shot her up to a placing position. And we're all grateful for that.

: THANK YOU BREAKMAN.

(Even though she's not actually a robot!!!)

More of a robot than Samus.

Minutes ago, I remembered a robot that I had thought of last week, but forgot to actually add to my list. And it probably didn't make the top 50, so that stinks.

Frankenstein's Monster is a science zombie.

Mad science is about more than just robots. Just ask Dr. Robotnik(also not a robot).

Frankenstein's Monster does not have Artificial Intelligence, it has actual intelligence. Just not a whole lot of it.

Nice start so far. And while James Spader's performance as Ultron is one of the better parts of that movie (I liked it overall, but it is a bit overstuffed), I always preferred Ultron's perma-angry face from the comics.

Also, was Alita a cyborg? I thought she was just a really human looking robot.

Anyway, no disrespect to those who voted for cyborgs or unembodied artificial intelligence, but I went classic robot/android/synthezoid on this one (though I'm sure some would debate my #5).

Never heard of Ershin, but was able to guess that BoF4 mean Breath of Fire 4. Been a while since I played any RPG, though I started up my Final Fantasy III (the one with jobs, not the one that is really VI) campaign again. That really is a fun game.
