Default Who is History's Greatest Fictional Monster? Talking Time's Top 52 Villains

You guys voted, and here are the results.

As a reminder, candidates had to be:

A) Fictional,

B) A specific character rather than a group or species or whatever,

And as I realized I should have specified beforehand,

C) An actual sentient being and not an abstract concept or something.

Because of ties (so many ties), 52 characters ending up making the cut for the final vote. 241 characters got votes but didn't make the list. Let's reveal some of those with our

DISHONORABLE MENTIONS

There is a flaw with the weighted voting system we use. Obviously the higher a character is on a ballot, the more that should be considered in the final accounting. But there is a bit of a gap: essentially, our system counts the difference between a 1st and 2nd place vote the same as the difference between a 25th place vote and no vote at all. That's obviously misleading, because we don't know if any given character might be your 26th pick or nowhere near consideration. With that in mind, here are the characters who made it on 3 lists but didn't make the final cut.

175. Anton Chigurh
NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (Book, Film)
3 votes, 13 points. Top vote: 18th (Johnny Unusual)

I haven't read the book, but Chigurh is the most memorable part of possibly the Coen brothers' most acclaimed film. He's scary and single-minded in a way we usually think only robots can be.

139. Randall Flagg
THE STAND, other various Stephen King works (Books, Film, Comics)
3 votes, 17 points. Top vote: 11th (Masterthes)

Flagg has appeared in numerous Stephen King stories over the years, with various monikers. One consistent element seems to be that he's a real bad dude.

109 (tie). Jafar
ALADDIN, other various Disney appearances (Film, TV, Video Games)
3 votes, 20 points. Top vote: 15th (Masterthes)

Jafar has inspirations in older films based on classic Arabian tales and even a real historical person, but it seemed clear that people were voting for the guy from the animated movie. He's a real devious, skeevy son of a bitch.

109 (tie). Dr. Wily
MEGA MAN series (Video Games, TV, Comics)
3 votes, 20 points. Top vote: 12th (Sanagi)

If there's one thing Dr. Wily loves more than hating Mega Man, it's designing robots to kill Mega Man. He doesn't have much else going on, though.

76. Gaston
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, other various Disney appearances (Film, TV, Comics)
3 votes, 24 points. Top vote: 15th (Grignr)

Another character who has roots in older stories, but people are definitely into the Disney animated one. He's both a good classic villain and a great foil for Beast, having the outer beauty but being hideous on the inside.

59 (tie). Golbez
FINAL FANTASY IV, other various FF appearances (Video Games)
3 votes, 27 points. Top vote: 6th (Torzelbaum)

Golbez is the antagonist of Final Fantasy IV.

59 (tie). Megatron
TRANSFORMERS franchise (Comics, TV, Movies, Video Games)
3 votes, 27 points. Top vote: 13th (Kirin)

Megatron is the leader of the ruthless Decepticons, evil robots who will be fighting the noble Autobots long after we're all dead. He also has a heck of a voice.

TOP 52

50 (tie). Lady Eboshi
50 (tie). Maleficent
50 (tie). Gul Dukat
49. Lavos
48. Khan Noonien Singh
47. Professor James Moriarty
46. Joffrey Baratheon
45. Skeletor
43 (tie). Wilson "Kingpin" Fisk
43 (tie). Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish
42. Makoto Shishio
38 (tie). Amanda Waller
38 (tie). Jareth, the Goblin King
38 (tie). Lord Voldemort
38 (tie). T-800 Model 101
37. Nurse Ratched
36. Eric Cartman
35. Judge Doom
34. Bowser
32 (tie). Emperor Sheev Palpatine
32 (tie). Walter White
31. Bill Cipher
30. Char Aznable
28 (tie). The Sheriff of Nottingham
28 (tie). Sailor Galaxia
27. The Wicked Witch of the West
26. Pennywise the Dancing Clown
25. Sephiroth
24. The Monarch
23. Iago
22. Lorne Malvo
21. Ursula
20. Sauron/The One Ring
19. Edward "The Riddler" Nigma
18. Q
17. Darkseid
16. Magneto
15. Loki
14. Dolores Umbridge
13. Azula
12. Gustavo Fring
11. Hans Gruber
10. Luca Blight
9. Ganon/Ganondorf
8. Dr. Victor Von Doom
7. Mr. Charles Montgomery Burns
6. Count Dracula
5. Alexander "Lex" Luthor
4. GLaDOS
3. Kefka Palazzo
2. Darth Vader
1. The Joker

Anton Chigurh
He wasn't on my list but there's no doubt he's a blood-chilling motherfucker. I think what really gets under my skin is that his faux-casual conversational tone makes him sound like something doing a really lousy job of pretending to be human. "Got a screwgie, friendo?" Nobody talks like that aaaaaaaaaaaaa

Fans of Wily who would like to see him given a little more depth should check out Hitoshi Ariga's Mega Man Megamix and Mega Man Gigamix manga series. Three volumes each, all available in English. They're terrific fun, and Gigamix in particular manages to give a surprising amount of nuance to Wily, his Robot Masters, and his relationship with Light.

This is a great idea and I'd love to see other lists do it going forward.

Yeah, I love this little extra, nicely done.

Gonna try to get in those paragraphs soon...

Edit: You could've got him on the list, Falsey! A failure worthy of the Autodorks!

This is a good point and it might be worth weighting the points differently in future lists to try to mitigate the issue.

Wow, Megatron and Flagg didn't make the top 50?

That's... Genuinely surprising

I thought of voting for Jafar but then I remembered who persecutes harmless crackpots.

I'd hope so, at least.

But that guy is barely my third Favorite Hasbro-toy derived Supervillain of the 1980s.

I'm embarrassed that I forgot all about Chigur. Such a great villain, and I'm shocked Flagg didn't make the cut. Maybe because he went out like a little bitch in the last Dark Tower book

I love that Anton basically turns everything this poor guy says into an attack.

Chigurh made my list. I saw the movie first, but the book is just as good. I really need to read more Cormac McCarthy.

I remember people saying the character is a symbol of death and/or evil. I agree with the death part but I think it's more than that: I think he's someone who thinks he is death. I also see his last scene in two ways: some say "even God tried to kill him and failed", which is a fun way to look at it. But I see it as the character being shown that as much as he thinks he is a force of death, he is just as vulnerable as anyone else to it. God, that's a great book/movie.

I didn't submit my votes because I misplaced the note on which I was jotting my entries as I thought of them. I think it may have dropped out of my pocket while at Moe's last week, so I hope whoever found it was greatly amused.

Anyhow, Gaston would have been near the top as he is possibly my favorite Disney villain. It's scary when you realize he probably would be the hero in any other story.

I just realized that I didn't include a single Disney villain (unless you count properties that are currently owned by Disney). On a different day, I could easily have seen myself including Jafar, Ursula, Scar, Gaston and Sid.

I don't think I included a Disney movie villain either but while there are some great ones, none of them suited my taste enough to make my list.

I had a half-dozen or more Disney villains on my initial list, but only one survived the culling. If this had been a list of best villainous musical numbers, that would have turned out quite differently.

I tried to pick fun villains that make you cheer for the heroes and having a good villain song (with reprise) sure helped in my list.

I forgot to submit a list. I had one started but kept coming up with more choices and i got a little overwhelmed and just didn't find time to get back to it...

I probably would have listed Jafar b/c I enjoy Aladdin way too much.
