Default Music Videos (and AMVs)

Partially influenced by recent on-site antics. Talk about your all-time favorite music videos here! Because, y'know, visuals and music go pretty awesome together.

I decided to include AMVs as well, 'cos despite all the random crap that people throw together, sometimes a really awesome one gets made.

As an example of this, I present what is probably The Greatest AMV Ever: Kusoyaro's Studio Ghibli/Abbey Road tribute.

Daft Punk - Around the World
Watch those crazy people dance in circles! It's mesmerizing and brilliant.
(YouTube)

Queens of the Stone Age - Go With the Flow
Like an iPod commercial from hell.
(YouTube)

Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up
Spoiler warning! It's a chick.
NSFW(YouTube)NSFW

The Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight, Tonight
Awesomely conceived and executed.
(YouTube)

The Smashing Pumpkins - Ava Adore
The whole thing was done in one or two takes (I'll have to dig out my DVD to double check).
(YouTube)

Pearl Jam - Do The Evolution
Badass animation.
(YouTube)

Pink Floyd - The Wall
Good luck finding it on YouTube.

I'm surprised no one mentioned that one Muse music video, Knights of Cydonia.

Love the song, the video's good, but not great enough to make the top of my list.

Hey Mighty, that song is gonna be in Guitar Hero 3.

A couple of mine:

Johnny Cash - Hurt
An awesome cover of a NIN song that Reznor says is no longer his song anymore.
Link

Shakira - Hips Don't Lie
Stupid song is catchy and watching her is hypnotic.

I don't watch many "regular" music videos, but I'll always have a soft-spot for this number by DVDA. Nothing great, but a lot of fun.

As for AMVs, there is a ton of crap, but some are pretty good. EVAlbuquerque might just be my favorite though. Short and sweet.

Cibo Matto - Sugar Water

It's pretty darn impressive that they managed to pull this off.

Link

Halcali - Tandem

Most Halcali videos are quite interesting, but this was the first and is still one of the best.

Link

Ringo Shiina - Ringo no Uta

The story behind this video is what makes it great. This is the video for Ringo's final single as a solo artist. She has since moved on to lead the group Tokyo Jihen, but when her solo career came to an end she wanted to cap it off properly. This video is comprised of elements from the videos for all of her major hit singles, and features her in the costumes she wore in each of them. Throughout the video we follow a line from the mole on her face in one shot to the mole in the next. It all comes to an end with simply Ringo, in black and white, sans mole. The mole was an iconic part of her image back then, and she had it removed to coincide with the end of her solo career.

The single disc was also brilliant, featuring, in addition to "Ringo no Uta," an excellent orchestral arrangement of an older song and an ending track that was comprised of bits and pieces of nearly every song she produced as a solo artist. But it wasn't just a lazily thrown together series of samples. Rather, she nabbed different instrument and vocal parts from different songs, shifted the pitch and tempo, and somehow mashed them together into a cohesive whole. I remember that the moment I started to realize what I was listening to was when I recognized one part as the guitar riff from one of her songs, but upside down.

But I digress. Here's the video.

Link

For non-Japanese music video goodness, I recommend the Director's Series DVDs, which feature the works of people like Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham and Michel Gondry.

Oh, and seeing as how Daft Punk has already been brought up, I have to say that in my highly biased opinion their best music video is basically the entirety of Interstella 5555.

Yeah, very wow. I thought the first half of the video was pretty cool. Then, at the midpoint, my mind was utterly blown.

I thought I saw where it was headed early on, but was still surprised by exactly how it worked. I thought we'd just see that it was two really long takes that came together at the end into one shot, I wasn't expecting the actual overlap, or however you'd describe that.

U.N.K.L.E. - Rabbit in Your Headlights Possibly my favorite music video ever.

I don't know if this one counts because it's fan made but it's still completely awesome, Daft Hands.

Man, I think the last time I watched Music Videos was when MTV was actually music television. So yeah, Michael Jackson had some awesome videos, Thriller being my favorite. And Duran Duran's Hungry Like the Wolf was fairly awesome. Almost nothing can beat A Ha's Take on Me.

Moving twenty years later, The Decembrist's Sixteen Military Wives rules.

Favorite Music Videos? Well Ok.

What Would Brian Boitano Do
It's just so awesomely random. I mean yes, the whole thing is basically an advertisement for the now 8-years-old south park movie, but it's a darn good advertisement. Plus the ending had me laughing out loud.

Golden Gate Fields
Sometimes It's better to just get out there and play the song. Golden Gate Fields is my personal favorite Rancid Song, being played by the band. No complex story built from a variety of short clips. Just 4 guys rocking out like crazy, just like God Intended.

Hit That
A visually striking video about a dog and his blue owner, set to a song by the Offspring about how much trouble free love can get you into. That's just awesome. The runner up for their best video would be "I choose" But youtube's quality for that one is well below abysmal.

Better get it at their website instead.

Who Sent Ya
The only AMV I ever truly loved. Dead leaves is so awesomely whacked out, and Snot's "Deadfall" fits it perfectly. My enjoyment of this sort of banal entertainment probably significantly lowers the opinion everyone here holds of me, but I doubt I'll lose any sleep over it.

No sir. Dead Leaves is pretty ridiculous, but Snot rocked hard, and the combination of the two makes for a fun (if overly chaotic) video.

Now this takes me way back. Still one of Michel Gondry's finest. Caught it during M(TV)2's free preview hours on MTV, including an all-Gondry hour that I still have on tape somewhere.

Awesome song and video. Over too soon though, unfortunately.

Here's another one:

U2 - Vertigo

My brother worked on this video, and was even nominated for a VMA for it (Best Cinematography).

My brain hurts when I think about trying to post links to music videos.
Plus, I don't want to overload you guys with Sex Machineguns.

But now that I think about it, I'll give out 2!

Suspense Gekijou, which is just so much fun to watch regardless of music preferences
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hev3TsNdjpw

Sexy Hero Revolution, because loose parodies of the best music video ever are always awesome. Also, the 'girl' is the lead guitarist :P
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhTIY29dMeA

And what the hell, here's a third encore blowout for my favorite music moment from japan. It's technically a music video, being a video containing music. Do concert videos count?
Anyways, Mikan at the Final Attack at Budokan concert (last concert before 2 members get swapped). SMG is like 10x more awesome live, despite great videos. If nothing else, at least skip to 2:50 for epic guitar battling:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnXUBEJKJtE

One last recommendation, although I'll not link to it. Look for The Beatles' rooftop concert video, because that's my favorite all time moment in music history, and I'm not a Beatles fan or anything.

Ditto

Ditto Squared

And while this isn't quite a music video I defy anyone to say its not utterly fantastic.

David Bowie + Talking Heads means that this thread is deep into win territory.

A video I wanted to share earlier but didn't spot on YouTube at the time:

Yuki - Sentimental Journey

Give it a minute to get going. This is a reproduction of the big, fold out picture that serves as the booklet for her album Commune.

EDIT: How could I forget about Polysics?

I My Me Mine (Strong Machine 2 Version)

Electric Surfin' Go Go

Obviously, Mizerable by Gackt deserves mention. The song is kickass, but the video is cool too, if you don't mind seeing a lot of Gackt standing around looking all pretty and tortured. He's pretty good at it, you know. Also, the violin demon is love.

Oh man, that video was frickin' awesome! Looking it up on Wikipedia, it apparently goes with a drama series where Gackt actually plays the feudal warlord Uesugi Kenshin. I need to watch that somehow.

We just got the single in the mail yesterday. Returner is rather good on its own, but for me the highlight of the single is a new live recording of Cube, my favorite Gackt song (and a b-side, no less).

Watching all these awesome japanese videos reminded me of my favorite PV of all time: Supercar - Be.

*warning* The video does contain some brief nudity.
