Call me impetuous, but I think we need a follow-up to our Galaga Legions Fun Club with the game that inspired it.

Which, unfortunately, was not one of the two volumes Namco chose to re-release in GH form.

Can't until Friday - the Wii is at the other house.

In the meantime, this page contains some useful information. It's all in moonspeak, but at the very least the power up pictures and bonus stage charts are nifty.

I just realized where the flags in Star Fox Assault come from.

Here's something from memory - on the bonus stages, you can accidentally shoot the aliens off the top of the screen if you nail them too high. For the first few waves at least, it's best to pop them about 2-3 ship heights above the baseline.

Yeah, they're awesomely cheap. I expected SNES or N64 level pricing.

Hey, wow, Parsec 4 actually made me jump a bit in my seat. It says something for a 25 year old game that takes up about as much memory as this post to be able to create such a moment by completely inverting the expectations it had built by then.

I just figured that 8-bit games would have 8-bit prices. When they start making games like Numan Athletics and The Outfoxies, they're probably start charging 800 to 1000 points for those.

But this is GameSpite, no? Not to mention that it's quite the out-of-the-blue appearance.

I'll download it next time I get on the service. Good on Namco for getting started with a couple games not already re-released a hundred times.

92,400 / Parsec 9.

Also, apparently Gaplus was on the Wii Namco Museum Remix, but nobody cared!

193,000 / Parsec 15.

If your game ends and you have ship pieces left, they will continue into the next game.

Holy shit, Numan Athletics is on the release list for future VC Arcade games! Damn, am I good or what?

(No Outfoxies, though)
(You get the feeling these are all going to be Namco games instead of Capcom's awesome CPS1 titles or Konami's famous beat 'em ups?)

so what's the credit situation like with these VC arcade games? does it let you keep feeding it imaginary quarters as much as you want, or do you get a set number of credits?

Judging from the Neo-Geo collections, I suspect these games are set to free play. I talked to a friend who downloaded Gaplus and didn't think to ask, but it seems pretty self-evident.

Gaplus requires you to feed it "quarters" by pressing + and 1 to insert credits, then + and 2 to start.

It doesn't tell you this - and I was slightly confused as a result - but the Z1 and Z2 buttons are used on the classic controller.

Also, I didn't see any difficulty switches, but you do have the option to change the extend and starting lives.

No, because Sega and Taito are also on board, and both of them have more than enough of a back catalog to keep my wallet permanently pried open if they so choose.

I'd really like to know how to trigger the ship power up on demand.

I like how your buddy enemies stop you from moving when they hit the side of the screen. They dropped that in Galaxy Legions, didn't they?

The manual implies that the power up-bearing enemies are distinguishable from the others, but damned if I can figure it out.

Same here. I'd also like to get the S Flags to trigger as well.

Also, having the better weapons locked away on the later stages is lame. You have to make it to Parsec 16 to get the Elephant and 36 to get the Sidewinder.

From the Wiki:

Quote:
An easter egg exists in the game that lets a player obtain the upgraded ship on the first parsec, without resorting to the difficult shooting star method outlined above. This is achieved as follows. When the game begins, the player allows all enemy ships to "form ranks" without destroying any of them. When the shooting star appears, the player immediately shoots the bottom alien second from the left. Then the special flag will appear. The player does not collect the flag immediately (which awards a bonus life). Instead, they must wait for the King (carrying the tractor beam powerup) to attack, then crash their ship into him. (They must crash into the King, and not the powerup.) All remaining ships are immediately upgraded to the "triple shot" version. The player can then collect the flag to restore the lost life. If the flag is not obtained, and left into the next level, another flag will appear. By simply letting them gather on parsec 2 too, only instead of shooting the bottom left one, shoot the bottom second to right alien. As an additional quirk, in two player mode the second player's ships are also upgraded; that player can then use the same technique (excluding crashing into the King) to obtain an additional life, giving them an advantage in the game.

Sooooooooooooo trying this tonight.

I got 73,000, largely by mastering the "Challenging Stage" bonus level. It's pretty easy if you have some options. Still haven't figured out how to reliably get said options.

First try:
31,000 / Parsec 5

Ooooh gosh this game is messing with me. Having the entire armada swoop down at me from the beginning of Parsec 4 was incredibly unsettling. This game feels so familiar yet so fresh it's mind boggling.

And capturing ships is every bit as great as I thought it would be.
