Default This hammer can forge a woman! Let's Play Summon Night: Swordcraft Story!

Wystern, the City of Swords. This island city, famous for its many Craftknights and the high-quality weapons they create, is ruled over by seven Craftlords. Or was, until Shintetsu, the Craftlord of Iron, disappeared three years ago. Now a tournament is being held to find someone worthy to succeed him. But with frequent earthquakes threatening the city, and the militaristic Deigleyans amassing troops and weapons, is there a deeper meaning to the tournament? And just what happened to Shintetsu three years ago?

Summon Night: Swordcraft Story is a GBA Action RPG that marked the first appearance of the Summon Night series outside of Japan. Eschewing the series' strategy RPG roots in favor or a Tales-esque battle system, the Swordcraft Story subseries emphasizes material gathering and weapon forging. The game systems, though simple on their own, allow for a surprising amount of depth and breadth of playstyles. It's not a great game, but it's got a simple and unpretentious sort of fun to it. I hope to show your the game's charm via this LP.

But before I can begin the LP in earnest, however, I need input from you the readers! Swordcraft Story offers the player a choice of two main characters:

Cleru the blue-clad young son of Shintetsu, with his somewhat silly headgear, or

Pratty the red-clothed young daughter of Shintetsu, also sporting rather silly headwear.
There's no difference between the two characters gameplay-wise, and only minor differences in the story. But anyway, post and let me know which character you'd like to see star in this LP.

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL!! Call now and you'll get your choice of Guardian Beast ABSOLUTELY FREE! A Guardian Beast is the player's loyal companion through the game, using magic when you called in battle and helping to forge weapons. Each learns spells in a different order, and can create elementally-embued versions of swords and two other weapon types.

Rasho the Oni. Arrogant and sharp-tongued. Excels with Fire spells, Axes, and Drills.

Sugar the Fairy. Affectionate and jealous. Specializes in Water spells, Spears, and Knuckles.

Zantek the Mech. Talks in all ☆s. Best with Lightning spells, Spears, and Drills.

Kutty the Pokémo-- I mean, Beast. Only capable of saying "Kutty!" Has an affinity for Wind spells, Axes, and Knuckles.

This is a limited time offer, so get those votes in now! (Please don't pick Zantek or Kutty. They can't even talk. Rasho or Sugar will make for a more interesting LP)

Last and most very certainly least, it is possible to rename both the main character and the Guardian Beast (up to 12 letters, numbers, or , ' ? !), but then there's no name on their text boxes and some conversations become hard to follow. I'll only rename them if there's an overwhelming demand for it.
I swear if you guys make me copy and paste that ☆ a million times I'll... probably go cry in the corner.

Hmm, let's go with Pratty and either Rasho or Sugar. I actually ended up really enjoying this game, mostly for its simplicity both in story and gameplay. Its sequel, on the other hand, was the epitome of cliche and unneeded dialogue (sorta like the Tales games they were aping). Are we going to get to vote on who you hang out with at the end of the day too?

I WOULD nominate the Pratty/Sugar team of Awkwardness, but... Drills are the most kick-ass weapon.

I can't choose.

Well, you can still make the normal weapons of all 5 types regardless of which Guardian Beast you have, and there are a handful of special elemental weapons you can get the plans for via other means. The Guardian Beast affinity just allows you to take a normal weapon technique and make an elemental weapon from it. These are usually just a small step up from the normal weapon, while the special weapons are usually quite a bit stronger. Anyway, I intend to take requests for what weapons you folks would like to see me make.
In other words: Sugar + Drills? No problemo. Sugar + shiny glowy fire drills? My options are a bit limited (Sorry Lucas). But there's this totally sweet lightning drill I can get a few chapters in, regardless.

It doesn't matter that the drills will probably lose. We must drill our way to victory!

So Pratty should use Rasho to both fire herself up and then drill her way to victory!

A game that offers drills as a viable weapon though, that's pretty cool.

I loved this game! I went with the Girl and the Bunny Rabbit for my playthrough, but I think I'm going to also go with the Pratty/Sugar team. I've heard great amusement is to be had there!

Well, looks like we've got enough votes to declare our winners, and it was pretty much a landslide! So without further ado, Let's Play Summon Night: Swordcraft Story!

And the story opens with anime cliche number one:

???: ...cup...
Half-asleep girl: Zzzz.... Make up? With who?
???: Are you listening to me!? Wake! UP!!

Half-asleep girl: Zzzz... Why is Mother yelling about makeup?
Amariss: I've tried to get you of bed SEVEN times this morning! Are you going for a new record!?
The opening ceremony is today! Remember!? Now get DOWN here!

Yes, that's right, the protagonist is oversleeping on an important day and has to be woken up by her mother. Also, like every other RPG out of Japan we're drowned in a sea of ...s and !?s.

Half-asleep girl: ... That's today? Uh-oh... I have to get ready...
...In a couple of hours...

Amariss: You mean, in a couple of seconds-- What's that?
(The screen shakes)
Amariss: AHHH!!

Girl: Oh! What was that!?

The girl runs downstairs.

Girl: Hello?

Girl: Huh!? It wasn't you that screamed?
Amariss: Of course it was! I just wanted to make sure you were awake.
Girl: Don't DO that! I thought you were hurt, or worse--
AAAAHH!!

Yeah... she just fell down the stairs.

My thoughts exactly. Also, it just occured to me that she was sleeping in her clothes. Even that cumbersome-looking harness. Oh, videogames. You so crazy!

Amariss: Well that's an interesting way to come downstairs, isn't it?
Girl: I tink my node id bwoken...
Amariss: That looked like it hurt! Are you alright?
Girl: Are you kidding!? Of course not! Who put those there!?
Amariss: I'm guessing it was the carpenters who built the house. How could you forget where the stairs are in your own house!? Are you trying to make me worry about you!? because it's working!
Girl: Of course I didn't forget! I'm fine.
Amariss: I'm not so sure. Do you know where you are? What's your name?
Girl: ...You're kidding, right?
Amariss: No, I'm not kidding. I'm making sure you're alright. Now tell me your name!
Girl: Okay, okay! I'll tell you

Amariss: Next question! What is your job?
Pratty: (Why is Mother asking me such absurd questions? One little accident and she fears the worst!)
I work for a Craftknight, Mother!

Amariss: And what do you do for this Craftknight?
Pratty: I'm his apprentice.
Amariss: And what does this Craftknight do?
Pratty: He forges metal into weapons, and he teaches me how to do it, too.
Satisfied yet?

Amariss: No, not yet. What is the airspeed velocity of an African swallow?
Pratty: Unladen or carrying a coconut?

Wait, hold on, that's not how it went. Ah, here we go.

Amariss: No, not yet. What's MY name?
Pratty: That's easy. Amariss.

???: That's not my name!
Pratty: Stop fooling around!
Amariss: I'm just kidding. You're fine.
Pratty: Of course I am!
Amariss: It sounded like an earthquake when you fell down the stairs. I thought the house was about to collapse!

Amariss: Anyway, don't you remember what's happening today?
Pratty: Of course I do! Today is the opening ceremony of the tournament that determines the new Craftlord! The Craftlord becomes a knight of Wystern, the legendary City of Swords... and is given the honored task of guarding Parista, the sacred spirit of the holy sword.
I never thought I would be chosen to participate in the tournament. It almost feels like a dream... But I intend to win the tournament and become the guardian of Parista, just like Father did!
But I'l never win if I don't leave right now!

Amariss: Hold on! Here... take this with you.
Pratty: What's this? A good-luck charm? It looks kind of old.
Amariss: That is your father's lucky charm. I made it to protect him. He took it wherever he went. Until one day... three years ago...
Pratty: ... ... ... Ahhh! attack of the ellipses! Look out!
Amariss: Perhaps he left it here on purpose.
Pratty: Mother?
Amariss: Your training is about to become much more difficult, and you have many arduous battles ahead of you. This charm will help you. Your father was never injured when he carried it with him.
Pratty: Thank you, Mother. I'll take good care of it.

Amariss: You'd better go. You don't want to miss it! Good luck...
Pratty: You can count on me!

But first, there's something important upstairs.

(This is my Entrance Ticket! I can't get into the Central Tower without it.)

And also downstairs.

(This is my Water Scooter! With it, I can ride across water.)

And finally outside, into the open air and bright blue sea!

Pratty: (The Central Tower. I wonder what it looks like...?)
She must be wondering about the inside, because it's pretty much impossible that she's lived in Wystern her whole life and has never so much as glanced at the enormous central structure that towers over the entire city. Anyway, Pratty's house is in the southeastern corner of Wystern's first floor, so we head northwest past a large building and over a bridge.

Pratty: I'm starting to get nervous...
???: Pratty! What're ya doin'?

Pratty: Hello, Master! Good morning!
Bron: Yer cuttin' it a little close, aren't ya?
Pratty: Don't worry! I still have time.
Bron: Sounds just like somethin' yer father woulda' said. Why not try bein' more like yer mother? He was always runnin' late, and always makin' excuses for it, just like a woman.
Pratty: Hey, that's sexist! I think I should tell Mother of your poor attitude towards the female gender.
Bron: Now why would ya go an' do somethin' cruel like that!?
Pratty: Just kidding, Master! Not that you and Mother get along well anyway.
Bron: Do ya really think so? Thank ya for yer honesty, however depressin' it is...
Well, I'm headin' back to the Silver Guild. Come an' find me after the opening ceremony. And ya better win the tournament, b'cause I don't work with second-class apprentices!

Pratty: (Second-class apprentices? Master Bron isn't exactly filling me with confidence.
Anyway, I'll head to the Silver Guild right after the ceremony.)

This is the Silver Guild. It's the large building we passed earlier after leaving Pratty's house.
Before we head into the Central Tower though, let's take a look around town. This is a videogame after all, so I'm sure they won't start the opening ceremony until Pratty shows up. Heading west, we come to the fountain square, where the item shop, inn, curry shop (currently closed for renovations), and a couple of houses are.

This kid reminds me of the boy in Final Fantasy X who wants to be a Blitzball when he grows up, except that kid was retarded. Visiting an old man in the bar nets us this pearl of wisdom:
Experienced old man: Curiosity is the most important of human desires. When you try something, you will experience something. It might be good or bad, but it will always be educational.
I tried many things when I was young. Too many, perhaps! Now I'm here to share the knowledge I gained from my different experiences.
Do you burn with curiosity? Do you want to experience a variety of strange situations? Then you must venture not only where are you supposed to go, but where you are not!

Yes, we'll be venturing into a lot of places we're not supposed to go in this game. Really, it sets a poor example for the children! Let's head outside and see what other things we can learn from our elders!

...Let's move on, shall we?

In the first house here we find the Curry Kid and his mom, the first in a series of NPCs with a single defining characteristic.

Curry Mom: My child is completely addicted to curry, so I want to help him break the habit. What would you call that? Going cold curry?
No Curry Mom, I don't think that's what you'd call it. Also, how does one become addicted to curry? What exactly is she putting in this kid's food? I doubt most curry recipes list cocaine as one of the ingredients.

Next door is the Cat Girl and her family.

Cat Mom: So you're an apprentice? My husband is a Craftknight, too! If there's a more popular career path in Wystern, I haven't heard about it!
She's not kidding. Pretty much every adult male in this town, and many of the women, are Craftknights. And every teenager is an apprentice. About the only exception are the handful of shopkeepers. And this guy, who lives in a house in the southwest corner accessible only by water scooter:

(That sounds excruciatingly painful)
Clumsy Man: My wife works to pay the bills, and I stay at home with the kids. She definitely has the better end of the deal...
Hmmm... maybe he should be named Man Who Hates His Kids?

We're almost done with our tour of the town, we just need to make one more stop. In the northeast, also accessible via scooter, is the Knuckle family.

Color me skeptical. Can you pierce the heavens with your knuckle? I think not.

Hmm, I feel like I'm forgetting something important. Mabye Knuckle Dad knows what it is.

Oh right. But on our way, we run into a mysterious lady who's important enough to have a portrait!

Pratty: Hello! (Wow... she's beautiful!)

Pratty: Huh?
???: Heh, heh...
Pratty: What...?
???: Take it easy.
Enigmatic! Or maybe just creepy.

Well, it's time to finally get this show on the road!

We enter the tower and head up the stairs.
..
Officer: You're Pratty, yes? The opening ceremony is taking place in this hall. Enter, please.

While waiting for the ceremony to begin, we chat with those around us.

Red-haired Girl: What? What do you want?

Boy in Blue Hat: The Central Tower is the castle of the Craftlords.

Boy in Green Bandanna: Hey, you! Who's your Guardian Beast?
Pratty: What's a Guardian Beast?
Boy in Green Bandanna: You don't know!? It's a creature that's summoned to our world from another dimension! Now I understand why you don't have a Guardian Beast... you don't even know what they are! A Guardian Beast acts as your assistant to help you forge weapons. Be assured that everyone in the tournament will be using a weapon made with a Guardian Beast. You can't hope to compete unless you have a Beast of your own.

Around that point, an officer of the Central Tower walked on stage.
Officer: Welcome to the opening ceremony of the Craftlord tournament!
Pratty: (Well, this is it! I'm getting nervous...)
Officer: Lubert, the Craftlord of Amber... Ureksa, the Craftlord of Jade, and Sakuro, the Craftlord of Sapphire. These three masters have deigned to address you, and you would be wise to heed their words.

Guess which of these people is evil and win a cookie*! *Cookies may or may not be provided to the winners.

Pratty: (Three years...)

Pratty: (I've got to snap out of it and pay attention!)
Sakuro: And Shintetsu's loss was followed by the disappearance of Tyram, the Craftlord of Crystal. We need to find a replacement for these men, to join the other Craftlords of Wystern as the guardians and protectors of Parista, the spirit that dwells within the holy sword.
A position has been prepared for one the apprentices in this chamber... and we will determine which of you standing before us is worthy of claiming this position.

Lubert: The majority of you lack the skill to be a worthy apprentice, let alone a Craftlord. But all of you possess the gift of youth, and a few of you, the potential that comes with it. We must harness that potential to protect Wystern. We must do whatever is needed to fortify the City of Swords!

A few members of the crowd take this moment to voice their own opinions

???: How does he explain all the adults in this city who cannot craft a decent weapon?
Pratty: (Who is that, and why is he so full of himself? Doesn't he know how unattractive that is?)

Pratty: (Oh! Another girl in the tournament! I hope we'll be good friends.)

Pratty: (That kid must be the youngest one in the tournament! I hope he doesn't get hurt... But I need to stop letting my mind wander and start listening to the Craftlords!)

Sakuro gives a rundown of the tournament rules:
1. You can only use weapons that you craft yourself.
2. A battle is won when the opponent yields, or their weapon breaks.
3. You can receive aid from your master for weapon forging.
4. You are allowed help from one partner during battles.
5, Your opponent will be announced the day of the battle.

Sakuro: The person who possesses the keys to the dungeon will bring one to each of you later on. There, you may collect materials with which to craft your weapons. There are many dangers in this dungeon, placed there to insure the safety of the great Parista. These dangers will not be lessened or removed for you. You will have to confront them and overcome them on your own. If you cannot defend yourself, you are not worthy of being in this tournament. You must always remember the Craftknight's code.

Sakuro: Let the code guide your efforts. They will be rewarded. Friendships will be forged in the heat of battle. When your skill is sharpest and your weapon is deadliest, you will be your own master.

Sakuro: That is all!

(In case you were wondering, I didn't cut any of Ureksa's lines -- he's just a really quiet guy!)

With the ceremony over, it's time to head home.

On our way out of the tower, we notice that the creepy lady from before is gone. Oh well, we'll probably never see her again. We head back to Pratty's house. Yes I know that's not where we're SUPPOSED to go, but remember what the old man said?

Pratty: I was pretty nervous. My heart was pounding the entire time... But I know I can do whatever it takes to win the tournament!
Amariss: Of course you do. Hee, hee, hee... I was so worried when you told me that you wanted to become a Craftlord. But now I see the strength of your father in you, and I realize I don't have to worry anymore.
Pratty: Hehe, what else did you expect from the daughter of Shintetsu, the Craftlord of Iron?
Amariss: That's true... you were always the type to break boys' noses, not their hearts.
Pratty: What!? That's got nothing to do with it! I hear the Craftlord of Ruby is a beautiful woman!
Amariss: Perhaps, dear, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder...
Anyway, Bron was here just a few minutes ago. Weren't you supposed to meet with him after the ceremony?

Pratty: That's right! He told me to visit him at the Silver Guild.
Amariss: I feel sorry for Bron. Has there ever been a time when you weren't late to meet him?
Pratty: I'm going! I'm going!

This is the inside of the Silver Guild. We follow the carpet to the left and go through the door.
Bron: Ah! There you are!

Pratty: I'm sorry, Master...
Bron: Yer apology is accepted. Now let's talk about the tournament, eh?
Pratty: (I've never seen Master Bron quite so serious...)
Bron: Answer me this. Do ya have the skill an' the confidence to win this tournament?
Pratty: Of course, Master! I'm the daughter of Shintetsu, the Craftlord of Iron! I'll win the tournament, no matter who stands in my way!
Bron: Yer father was a great man, and he earned the respect of everyone in this city. But ya can't expect to win the tournament just 'cause yer his kin.
Pratty: ...I realize that, Master.
Bron: I'm gonna be blunt. Ya don't have the skill or the brains to win this tournament. Ya don't even have the skill to win yer first battle.
Pratty: ...Is that really how you feel, Master? I'm sorry to hear it.
Bron: But ya don't have to worry, b'cause I'm gonna tell ya how to take this tournament!
Pratty: Is that so, Master? But I've never crafted a weapon on my own! I've only helped you make them.
Bron: Don't worry so much. Ya might win this thing yet! Also, ya should remember that I've got other apprentices in the tournament too... And I'm not gonna play favorites with any of ya.
Right, then. Follow me to my room. I've got somethin' special for ya!

Wait, wait. A large hairy man tells a pubescent girl to come to his room because he has "something special" for her? D: D: D:

Anyway, we head to the room on the right.

There's a fellow wearing strange clothes here.
Pratty: Is that who I think it is, Master?
Bron: That's right. He's a summoner. I brought 'im to Wystern for one purpose, and one only. He's gonna summon the Guardian Beast that'll become yer partner in battle. And I've gotta help him get ready.

Pratty: I never would have expected this, Master. I'm still in shock.
Bron: Why're ya so surprised? Did ya think ya would win the tournament all by yerself?
Pratty: No... but I'm not sure that a Guardian Beast is something I deserve to have. I was taught that only a skilled Craftknight should possess a Guardian Beast.
Bron: The only way yer gonna win this tournament is if you stop playin' by the rules. Take the Guardian Beast. Yer gonna need it.

First they tell us to go places we're not supposed to, and now to stop playing by the rules? This game is surprisingly subversive. And who taught Pratty that only a skilled Craftknight should have a Guardian Beast, when all the apprentices in the tournament is expected to have one (and by all indications everyone else already has theirs)?

Pratty: Yes, Master!
Bron: Do what ya came here to do, Summoner.
Summoner: Indeed, Bron. Tell me, child. What do you think of Shintetsu?
Pratty: (What a strange question. How should I answer it?)
I always hear about the respect that was afford my father, but I know very little about him. I want to learn about what he did, and who he was. And I want to be a person as respected and loved as he was.

Summoner: Bron, it seems that Shintetsu's child was raised well.
Bron: Of course, Summoner! This child was raised by Amariss!
Summoner: The bonds between parents and their children are very special.
Pratty: What do you mean?
Bron: Yer mother was the best teacher ya could've had. She taught ya how to survive, an' how to thrive.
Pratty: Mother rarely scolded me when I was growing up... but I always paid attention when she did! And boy, was she strict...
Summoner: Remember that Amariss has had to be both a mother and a father to you. She had to discipline you as Shintetsu would have.
Pratty: So... not all mothers threaten their children with spankings?
Bron: Only the smart ones.
And now it's time to get yer Guardian Beast!

Summoner: Not quite yet, Bron. I have another question.
Did you grow up preferring the strictness of Shintetsu, or the kindness of Amariss?

Pratty: I would never disrespect my farther, but I choose the kindness of my mother.
Summoner: My questions are finished. Let us begin the ritual. I need something that is important to you in order to call forth a Guardian Beast that is bonded with you.
Pratty: Something important...

Pratty: Oh, I know! The good luck charm!
Bron: That was your father's charm! How did ya come to have it?
Pratty: It was a gift...
Summoner: Alright. Now take hold of the Summonite Gem.

Summoner: Focus your thoughts... and wish for a Guardian Beast to aid you in your battles.
Pratty: Yes!

Too... many... ellipses...

Pratty: Huh? I mean, uh, of course.
Bron: How 'bout that? I didn't expect ya to call forth th' same Guardian Beast as yer father!
Pratty: You've seen her before?
Bron: Aye. In fact, she's... Well, I don't know how to explain it to ya.
Sugar: You're the child of Shintetsu, aren't you?

Sugar: Good... Very good...

You wanted awkward, you got awkward!

Bron: Anyway! Ya got your Guardian Beast. Now follow me to the second floor!

Sugar: Are you... ...upset with me?
Pratty: Of course I am!
Sugar: So, I guess... You don't like me anymore...
Pratty: (Uh-oh! I don't want to upset her. I need her for the tournament!)
Ha, ha, ha! I was just kidding! Don't worry about it!

Pratty: Now, uh, let's go to my new workshop, alright? Alright!
(Sigh...)

Also at this point we can talk with Sugar by pressing SELECT. Let's give it a shot! I'm also going to totally forget to do this every update!
Pratty: Let's go upstairs now. Master Bron is waiting for us.
Sugar: This workshop is just for the two of us! Isn't that romantic?
Pratty: Yeah! Wait... what!?

Well, let's check out this workshop. Up the stairs we go.

Bron: Only tournament entrants are allowed into the workshop on the second floor. And your workshop is here.

Pratty: Wow...

Bron: I hope ya like it... B'cause yer gonna be working here day and night from now on.
Pratty: Are you kidding!?
Bron: Don't ya wanna win the tournament? Don't ya wanna be a Craftlord? Then stop complainin' like a spoiled little brat! Yer mother agreed that ya should live here durin' the tournament. So the decision's already been made for ya.
Pratty: Yes, Master.
Bron: Why are ya so depressed? Yer followin' in yer father's footsteps, just like ya wanted! Ya should be proud, not sad!
Pratty: Yes, Master!
Bron: Now it's time to teach ya my secret techniques of weapon-forgin'.

Pratty: What!? Come on, Master! I'm a fast learner!
Bron: I'll let ya know when I'm ready to start yer lessons. You can hang around 'til then.
Pratty: Alright.

Bron leaves.

Sugar: This is where our new life begins, Master Pratty! I'm very excited! Why don't we go outside? We've got nothing to do here for a while. I'd love to see the ocean.
Pratty: That's a good idea. After everything that's happened today, I need a break.
Sugar: Thank you, Master Pratty!

Pratty: Hey, look at that ship! Let's go aboard!
Sugar: Won't we get into trouble for doing that without asking?
Pratty: Of course not! Now come on!

Pratty: It is nice... (Yawn...) I'm so tired.
Sugar: ...
Pratty: What's wrong?
Sugar: Nothing. I'm just very glad to have met you, Master Pratty.
Pratty: I'm glad I met you, too! I want to win this tournament and be a great Craftlord, like Father. Will you help me? And why don't you stop calling me Master Pratty?
Sugar: You don't like that?
Pratty: No... Just call me Pratty.
Sugar: Well... How about Miss Pratty, Master Pratty?
Pratty: On second thought, let's stick with "Master."
Sugar: Yes, Master!
By the way, Master Pratty?

Pratty: Yes?
Sugar: Please, Master... Be kind to me.
Pratty: Of course! You don't need to ask about something like that.
Sugar: I'm so happy now... knowing that my husband will be a kind person!

Pratty: Husband?
Sugar: Don't you know? I'm your fiance.
Pratty: Fiance!? No, I didn't know that! I can't be your fiance!!

Pratty: I can't be your husband! I'm a girl!!
Sugar: Of course you can.
Pratty: Of course I can't!!

Pratty: But I do mind!!
