Default NFC #10: Super Metroid

a) Since we're still knee-deep in two lengthy games, we need a shorter one for now.
b) Other M is coming! And since it begins how this game end (I guess), let's remind ourselves!

Super Metroid
Nintendo R&D1 | SNES/VC | THE Metroidvania | 1994

Bestest game ever? Maybe! Tons of fun? Yes!

I should get to finishing this. I'm stuck in Maridia right now, and I'm not sure whether I should just give up and use a guide or continue trying to find the way to progress (since I haven't used a guide for anything except how to wall jump, because damn, wall jumping is frustrating).

I propose this becomes a Fun Club at least once a year.

Hey, what? I'm actually partway through my second playthrough ever of this game right now. Guess I'll be participating!

Fun Club for this now? It'll be a good excuse to try for a three hours or less run, that's for certain. Now I just need to drag myself away from beating up minotaurs and werewolves with a bird-throwing little girl in a pink dress for a while so I can focus.

Well, I guess now is as good a time as any to get back into speed runs.

Oh great, a reason to finish the playthrough I started a few months ago on an emulator. Or start a new game on real hardware.

By the way, I'm kinda new here, is the "Fun" part mandatory?

For this game it is! (This is because it is physically impossible to play Super Metroid and not have fun.)

If you don't find it fun, you will be shot and your corpse hung atop the battlements of Gamespite, as a warning to all who would dare venture here and deny Super Metroid.

Or maybe you will just be silently judged.

Hmmm, should I finish Cave Story and MM10, or just start a new file in Super Metroid? This is actually a relatively difficult decision!

I have still never played this. Maybe it's time to fix that.

Yeah! You can get it for Wii Ware for $8, but I recommend using a Classic Controller for it over a Gamecube controller.

I played it for the first time last year and it now ranks among my favorite games ever. So.

I've never finished Super Metroid, simply because I end up getting whisked away by other games.

This time, though. This time. Things'll be different.

After being introduced to the series with the combination of Prime/Fusion in Christmas of '02, unlocking the original Metroid by connecting the two, and borrowing Metroid 2 from a friend, I asked for Super Metroid in Christmas of '03. I got my first 100 percent file about a month ago (mastering the mockball in the process). I then completed my first 100 percent file in under 3 hours. I was in the middle of an attempt to skip Spore Spawn, Crocomire, and Golden Torizo in one run when I got sidetracked. As soon as I finish Cave Story, I'll try to clean that up.

I could probably do another speedrun. My best time is about an hour, which is respectable, but quite improvable. Granted, I'm not the biggest fan for speedrunning. I prefer taking unorthodox routes through the game, like skipping the Gravity Suit.

I'm probably going to end up doing the latter, though the game is short enough that I might as well do both.

Oh *ahem*, good thing I like many people think Super Metroid as one of the best games ever. And of course that means it's much fun to play.

The customizable controls for this mean that I'll be able to use the Virtual Console version to find out if it's possible for a Gamecube controller to be any good for a SNES game.

Oh man, I got this for Christmas and I'm still trying to pick up the last few items before I move towards what I believe to be the final area. This game is so great, I kept obtaining new weapons and abilities only to ask myself what the next item could possibly be, assuming it'll be some sort of crappy throw-in. But everything is actually useful, and it's slightly depressing when you notice that there are no more blank slots in your equipment inventory.

You shouldn't try to get every last missile and energy tank on your first playthrough, some of them can be a pain to get. And the item percentage changes the ending a little bit.

Ah, thanks for that! Maybe I'll just look for that last energy tank and finish the game.

Yeah, there's a couple items you're just not going to find without a faq, and there's another couple you probably won't figure out how to collect without a faq. Don't feel bad beating the game and saving them for an additional replay.

So I'm playing through it without the Charge Beam and I just have to say, Crocomire's a real bitch when you have to about keeping your missle and super stock up without losing too much ground.

Edit: and oh hey, I didn't grab the power bombs first so I can't even get my reward yet.

Mission Complete in 53 minutes. Fun times, maybe tomorrow I'll start playing all the terrible rom hacks.

Good thing the game came with a great guide back in the day here in Germany, for whatever reason. Maybe the same reason many US SNES RPG releases had guides in the box. And Europe didn't even get many of that RPGs then, first Final Fantasy to come out in Europe was 7 for example. And the first release of Chrono Trigger we've got was the DS one back in March '09. Still waiting for Cross. But I digress, sorry for that.

Well... I'm going to try to see how much stuff I can find myself without an FAQ this run. Just got the Spring Ball yesterday, which I hadn't found before!

There's nothing really stupid like in Zero Mission, is there?

There's a few missile tanks I wouldn't expect any normal human to find. I think Brickroad mentioned them in his Let's PLay if you're curious.
