Mostly a decent slate, and glad Lily Gladstone and Da'vine Joy Randolph got nods, but damn, that May December hate was uncalled for. Charles Melton didn't get his nod for what, I believe, was performance of the year. At least Paul Giamatti got recognized, I guess.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that Anatomy of a Fall got nominated, but it has an equal chance with May December, the other actual best film of the year, of winning the award.

Godzilla Minus One is the first Godzilla film in the 70-year history of the franchise to get an Oscar nomination (Best Visual Effects)!!!
 
Yeah, the nominations aren't all bad this year.
No, they're still all bad. The VFX award is generally treated like a quarantine award to placate/keep out popular titles from the serious business awards that the dying boomers that run The Academy really care about. That Godzilla got shut out from the rest of the awards ought to tell you how serious this entire charade is.

It’s just simple math. Look at the kinds of films that typically receive those noms/awards. High budget scifi or fantasy movies that generally get shunned for other awards no matter how good they are. The Academy generally has a bias against those kinds of movies, just like they do against comedies. I am not the first person to make this observation. I was watching Roger & Ebert make the same criticisms of The Academy back in the 80s.

Technical awards do act as a form of ghetto. That said, I'm going to reserve judgement on whether G-1 should be content in said position considering its competition this year until I see it.

Except that in this analogy, the gecko is also extremely racist and sexist, and its preference of mealworms and crickets locks women and people of color out of duly earned success, recognition, and wealth.

But I thought your beef was that the academy didn't like big monster movies?
 
Godzilla Minus One would be an Oscar worthy movie even if you removed Godzilla completely from the film. The Oscars discriminate against genre films for sure. But they'll discriminate against foreign films just as much, or even more so.

There is also this thing that the Oscars does - that you observe collections of award voters do in other industries (sports comes to mind) - where they effectively punish excellence because it would essentially be boring to give awards to the same kind of movies multiple years in a row. And I highly suspect the Academy doesn't feel like giving Asian film makers much of a chance after Everything Everywhere All at Once and Parasite swept in recent memory. Past Lives filled their Asian diversity quotient for this year and that's enough of that.

Yeah, let's not forget the Animated category was created when a *gasp* cartoon came within a hair's breadth of winning Best Film.

I do think Godzilla Minus One is a great movie but Godzilla is integral to it and if you take it out there's not much left.

Godzilla Minus One is a screenwriter's dream wherein practically every line of dialogue in the first half (maybe even first 75%) foreshadows exactly what is going to happen in the finale. Complete with the obvious men-in-a-boat parallels, this makes the movie extremely similar to Spielberg's Jaws on a technical level. I would argue that, from that perspective, it is technically award-worthy on the merits of writing and (of course) special effects. Ryunosuke Kamiki should go on to star in seaQuest DSV: The Next Generation.

That said, as much as I enjoyed it, I can see how it would be interpreted as dry compared to some other award winners in recent years. It ain't 1976 anymore. The Academy wants... let's check the past years... multiple dimensions and mermaid fucking. Godzilla Minus One has none of that.
