Everybody to Chicago
Chicago is up there with 1961 West Side Story and South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut as one of my top 3 movie musicals all time, and you articulated why better than I ever could.Oof. Tough matchups this round. After a lot of thought, I’m going with Everybody Dazzle.
This number gives a great example of why I think Chicago is one of the two or three best movie musicals of all time. The way the movie cuts back and forth between “real life” and the heightened, “show” version of events is something that a stage production couldn’t do, and it’s never used to better effect than in a number about turning a trial into an all but literal circus. Also, although Richard Gere’s voice (while perfectly fine) isn’t in the same league as the voices of Billy Flynns like Joel Grey or Jesse L. Martin, the way he acts during his numbers is absolutely top notch. I absolutely adore the little moment when he and the chorus turn the line “they’ll let you get away with murder” into a brief, chilling reminder of what’s really at stake here.

I watched that version of America and was pleasantly surprised by how well it adapted the number for modern sensebilities. Have yet to watch the whole film.Have you seen the recent Spielberg version of West Side Story? If so, what did you think?
