I was a significant ways through Battle Tendency when I recognized any of the Pillar Men's names.

Which is weird because they'll do things like make a sideways reference.

The weirder ones is when the name is just a word, like Kiss or Surface.

It's really stupid and I don't think artistic creativity should be limited in that way. I don't care what the IP laws say, any that exist to enable this kind of fuckery should be repealed. A person should absolutely be allowed to do quirky things like straight up give their characters popular band names. We have given business majors WAY too much control over art the past hundred years or so.

Araki more directly references these things in the original versions. The approximated names are for the English translations. So in Japanese, you've got, e.g., Foo Fighters as フー・ファイターズ, pronounced like the band name would be in Japanese afaik, but translated back into English it's done as F.F.

I mean I do get that, I just mean they should be able to use the real band names in the localizations as well.

So at long last, after much waffling over it, I finally decided to sit down and start watching this JoJo thing. Everything I knew about this series until now was through internet osmosis, via memes and references, and TeamFourStar's parody videos so I only kinda knew what to expect.

I'm through Phantom Blood and just started Battle Tendency, and this series is a lot you guys. It's weird as hell and I kind of love its vibe. I was put off at first by all the extended internal narration from everyone but it quickly grew on me. It's just so earnest. You go ahead and narrate your every evil thought every moment of your life, Dio, you rascal.

I saw some talk upthread about the horror and violence of the series and while mostly nothing in Phantom Blood really turned me off there was one moment that made me go 'Wow, OK....', when Dio turned the mother holding her infant into a vampire and she went all Fat Bastard on it, yeeesh.

Still, moments of violence and gore aside I'm enjoying it so far and wish I started it sooner.

I've completed Battle Tendency and started Stardust Crusaders and the shift in tone between the two is fairly noticeable. It feels much more 'monster of the week' now, but that's not a complaint. It's still entertaining and ridiculous as all get out.

The end of Battle Tendency and start of Stardust Crusaders did have a not insignificant amount of discreet and not so discreet sexism. (Lisa Lisa facing verbal jabs about being 'just a woman' from Kars, Holly being injured by her Stand because she's 'not a fighter') Is this constant throughout the series or does it become less persistent later on?

Also, not strictly Jojo related, but goddamn I'm encountering a whole lot of Matt Mercer. First I got into Critical Role last year, then there was Ganondorf in TotK, then Vincent in FF7 Rebirth, and now Jotaro.

It gets somewhat better (particularly, better than the Lisa Lisa stuff), though it will be peppered in there sometimes still. There won't be a female lead character until part 6.

Lisa Lisa is definitely the lowest point but it doesn't ever really go away completely. Even part 6 has some... odd choices wrt gender.

Part 6 has flaws but if there's one thing that makes it better with women characters, it's that Araki just writes him like the males in that they are unhinged weirdos, just like all the other Jojo characters in the Stand era.

Might have spoken too soon on the whole gross sexism thing, because now while rescuing a child Jotaro, in trying to find out if the child is a boy or a girl, outright gropes her chest and I'm just like "DUDE".

Every JoJo has a different tone from the next. Stardust Crusaders going 'monster of the week' is a thing for a while until it isn't, when battles begin to become a little more drawn out (which is a good thing, believe it or not). The pace will flip about halfway through the series, once the Joestars & Co hit their destination in Egypt. The entire final arc of Stardust Crusaders is still one of my favorite things ever. It's the JoJo (admittedly haven't seen past 5 yet) that most epitomizes the "Bizarre Adventure" conceit of the series.

I remember that being the nadir of Part 3. There are some not so great moments peppered through the rest of the series, but if my memory holds up it doesn't get much worse. Or maybe I just memory holed it.

Now, if you are not a fan of violence against animals, JoJo never gets over that lol.

I have seen the cherry licking/rero rero episode so that's my first big 'I recognize that meme' moment in the series. At least since 'you thought it was X but it was me Dio!' early on.

I love the reveal that the effed up way the baddie was eating a cherry wasn't actually a tell and Jotaro kinda got lucky.

I've watched up through the Judgement two-parter, I already had Avdol's return spoiled for me but it's still funny how the others kept Polnareff in the dark about it. He's right to be upset, that was messed up! Hilariously messed up, but still!

One thing I've noticed is a lot of black shadows conspicuously covering the screen at times, like whenever things may get particularly gorey or when Jojo lit up a cigarette. Is that a Netflix edit or was it in the broadcast?

I don't remember the exact specifics, but yes it's censorship, and it existed before it was on Netflix. If you don't wanna see that stuff, I think you have to watch on BD or sail the seven seas.

Just watched the Set's Alessi two parter and...

Ugh.

Probably the most unpleasant pair of episodes of the series so far.
